uh oh....98 transfer case not fitting

I am replacing the transfer case in my 96 Disco a/t with one from a '98 Disco a/t. My mechanic just called to tell me that it is not fitting correctly as it seems the transmission output shaft is just a tad to long.....any help with work-around ideas? trans output shaft from a 98 a/t? other ideas? thanks in advance for your help!!!!!!!! my cell phone is 818-515-1151 if you care to call....it would really help me out of a jam....thanks!
