bad lower ball joint lead to howling?
I replace the whole arms, not just the ball joint. You have to get the angle just right to get the arm in there to clear the axle. I could not get the ball joint to release from the knuckle without the separator tool. Not my crappy pickle fork, nor whacking the knuckle with a mallet. -

Couldn't you get this behavior if the thermostat was stuck partiality open? I bet it's the thermostat still. -

The flickering needle illumination is something that happens with age, something with the contacts in the instrument cluster itself from what I've researched. I had it before/after my battery replacement. -

Looking to purchase timing chain tools
That all looks aligned to me. I think the paint mark on the cam just points to where mark is in the metal. If you imagine moving the chain over one tooth it would be even worse. -

Thoughts on these spark plugs?
I wouldn't expect the MAF to cause that since there's a single throttle body, if it were bad it would affect both banks equally. An O2 sensor could be it, though - if the reading is close to normal after the fuel trim take effect maybe it's just off. Can you swap side to side and see if it... -

Not scared, I appreciate the detailed answer, it makes a lot of sense. The coolant pipes are all relatively fresh, only 3 years old and 25k miles and I have not seen any coolant leaks. Just the coolant low warning and the smell after struggling up that hill. Looks like HF have both the tool... -

Would a head gasket issue lead to coolant smell at the front? I'll probably start with the pressure test, because I suspect that's the issue given the smell. If that comes out negative, I'll do the combustion gas test. -

PCV valves are new (after low coolant warning), but how do they contribute to coolant leak? Is the vacuum pump hooked up to the cooling system too? I know you can leak oil from there. -
