Just found out my 99 Land Rover Discovery series 1 with 80,000 miles has a blown head gasket. My dilema is that the nearest Rover dealer is close to 100 miles away, I can get it towed there, but how neccessary is it to take it to a dealer to have it fixed? A local mechanic says he can do it and has done it before with no problems. Should I tow it and have the "experts" do it, or should I stay local and not have the hassle of towing it? By the way, the "experts" at the rover dealer swear that my discovery is a series 2, as it is a 99 and they only made series 2 in 99? What is the deal with that?

(1) IMHO any competent mechanic can do a head gasket on any vehicle;
(2) They are morons if they think only D2's were made in 1999. That makes me question whether the dealer is appropriate for #1.

:biggrin:

Thanks, I took it to the local mechanic and they already had a disco up on the rack. Made me a feel good about the choice and advice!
