I presume you have a Disco 2 since you didn't say... check/add fluid is a little fun. you have to crawl under the Disco and the fill/check bolts are located on the front passenger side IIRC. there is not dip stick.

Disco 1 is on the Left side of the engine IIRC a tube with a handle should have a label that says trans.

Yep add it there if needed, remember to check the fluid level in park with the engine warm.

Where do you think I should start when trying to locate the source of a sputtering engine in low gear when I first start to drive??? I cleaned the MAF but where is the ECU?

Sputtering? How so in low gear only? Is this just when you first start or when warm or all the time from a start?

Have you already done the wires, plugs and fuel filter... Have you checked the air filter?

Yes, the wires are on the way with the fuel filter. I will be changing them by this weekend. It's usually all the time but just as I start to move from being stopped. regardless of being cold/warm. I had a friend tell me that it might be the type of fuel. I went cheap and used 89 with octane boost. problem has started since then. but now I can't get it to go away. I'm thinking after switching the filter I will try to run some seafoam to clean the injectors and the system????

never run cheap fuel in a Rover, it just isn't a good idea. I would also clean the IAC (Idle Air Control) and the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). Both are right next to each other in from of the intake just to the left of where the air intake connects to the intake manifold. Each will have a plug going to them and 2 screws holding them IIRC.
