Sounds like this '05 has not been out to play much! The transmission lurch is a common theme with early LR3 tranny programming. There is a s/w update that will fix this. Should be covered under warranty, which has expired now. Sounds like the original owner lives in a cave. If this vehicle is on a Land Rover lot they should update the tranny software before they sell it, I think.

Not sure about the fault. I've gotten some strange transmission-related faults in my time too, but none of them have ever amounted to much (knock on wood).

if it has the rear locker, the diff motor may be bad or stuck. There is a TSB and software patch for this as well.

for what its worth, early on a TSB fixed the problem on my '05, then it came back and LR tried to trouble shoot it for a couple years and couldn't figure it out. (they just kept saying it was the "learned" transmission settings). then someone looked at the throttle body and found that to be the problem. have not seen the lurch reappear since this was replaced.

so, it could also be that.

It happens when you don't come to a complete stop and then restart. Basically the trans doesn't tell the car to get down into first gear soon enough, then when you go to step on it, it decides to downshift and gives you that clunk. IMO, your reduced traction can just be a result of a less than fully charged battery. If you like that truck, I wouldn't be too afraid of it, but I'd probably pay to have a dealership look at it first to make sure it's just the battery.

My 05 had exactly the same issues (bought mine with 23K miles). The fix is a new Tranny ECU module. LR Denver East fixed it under my extended warranty policy but I think all told it would have cost me around $400 (parts and labor).
