Hello.

When I start my engine, the Starter motor "overstarts", that is it starts the engine but keeps going for a second, making the sort of noise you get if you turn and hold the key for second after starting.

Will this cause damage to the engine? I'm happy to leave it if it is just "cosmetic".

If it is damaging, Is there something that can be done to stop this or does it require a new starter motor??

Its ok for engine, but it shreds starter's internals in bits. Leads to faster wear of starter, and to need of new one.

I wouldn't let it go too long, you can do damage to the flywheel teeth and then you are looking at some big bucks.
