clock wiring

Hello all. Just bought an ebay rover clock to replace my original one with missing pixels but the wiring is 4 pin on the new one and 8 pin on the original. Had some success with the wiring but when I turn the ignition off the clock resets itself. colours are black,red/black,red/yellow,blue/white. Can this be wired into the 8 and if so where? or should I just be more careful with what I buy! Thanks Mark
