I have been given many opportunities to "get to know my disco" lately. Heres one for you guys and girls....

97 D1 189k when in gear and accelerating at 2k rpm travelling @ 45 mph the engine rumbles and i get the rumbling feedback in the steering wheel.

odd thing is that the rumbling doesn't happen when i accelerate in park.

a while back i had a fault code that read all cylinders are not hitting. perhaps a couple of coils have gone bad causing the engine to run rough?

any ideas? thx in advance for any replies.

could be coil pack or the VSS if you drop down to 3rd from drive and it goes away it is normally the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

I wanted to update this thread as I have sorted out the problem. The rumbling noise was a bad U-joint. Here's the fix:

I put the Disco in high lock and removed the front drive shaft. This gave me a rear wheel drive only and prevented any serious damage to the engine. Obviously the rumbling noise was gone after removing the shaft.

After talking to a few Disco Vet's, I decided to upgrade the solid shaft to a Disco II double cardon shaft. I bought a used D2 shaft and have it rebuilt locally with zerks to make it fully greaseable.

To install this on a D1, the transfer case output flange needs to be replaced with a D2 flange. I had the 4-bolt pattern differential flange so I did not need to replace it. Apparently some D1's have a 3-bolt pattern flange that will not work.

Installation was about 15 minutes with an air wrench and proper sockets and extensions.

I call it the "monkey shaft"
