To think that all they'd have to do is slap on some smaller wheels with more rubber, and the thing would be a monster . . .

I've always been under the impression that they needed the big rims to clear the giant brakes, which you need to stop these heavy vehicles. But with the ~400kg diet, don't you think they could put on some meatier shoes?

If the Compomotives fit just fine in 18", Land Rover could have figured out the same.

We do the Old Mojave Road with SCLR almost every Spring. We start near Laughlin, NV, and after 2 days and 100+ miles of glorious dirt roads and trails dipped in joshua tree forests, dry lakebed crossings and primitive camping in the middle of some stunning deserts, we pop out near Baker, CA. Last year we had a Sport along with stock 20s and Contis. He made it 1 day before slashing the sidewall of one on a rocky sretch of the trail climbing up a mountain. He had wisely borrowed a full size, spare 19" tire before leaving (his Sport only included a compact spare) so he was OK. Still, he had to cut his trip short by one day, he didn't feel comfortable continuing without a suitable spare.

If the trail is mostly sandy, as they often are in the lower deserts around here, the stock Contis will be OK, but IMHO you should never venture deep into a SoCal off-road trail without at least another vehicle, no matter what tire you have on, but especially with low profile tires such as those mounted on the 20" rims.
