I might start using high mileage oil, think that would help? Next oil change is at 75k.

Just checked ours. We're 3000 into our 7500 mile interval and oil level is a 1/4 down. It's only been 4 months.

Sound normal to me. Compare to my BMW X5 4.4 engine- it takes 8 3/4 Mobile 1 synthetic 0W40 and I do my oil change every 7500 miles interval. I lose around 2 to 3 qts by that time. NO LEAKS on my X5 whatsoever. Indy, BMW owners and BMW tech says the same thing- "thats normal oil consumption"

Last year, I driven my X5 hard and fast on summer time, and before I made it to 7500 miles since oil change, I got a Low Oil warning. Climate and the way you drive your vehicle and where to is a factor.

nsense, you are saying that your X5's engine takes 8.75 quarts of oil? That sounds like a lot. ...and losing 3 quarts in 7500 miles also sounds like a lot.

Am I reading you right?

I meant 8 1/2 qts. the 3 qts loss was my estimate every time my tech and I drain the old oil. We always check for oil separator leaks, oil leaks, hose leaks, vanos seals leak, etc. Nada. and every BMW tech and owners that do their own DIY in our x-outpost forums always say ' thats normal oil comsumption".

Still...I thought the 8 quart oil capacity of the LR3's 4.4 was something remarkable and a result of its off-road design. Seems kind of pedestrian now...

X5 4.8 takes about 9qts. I fill up 8 1/2 to 8 3/4 too.

I just changed from Mobil 1 synthetic to Mobil 1 high mileage synthetic. I figured for the extra .80 cents, why not?

Just a helpful side note for the DIY oil changers. Be sure to lube up the skid plate bolts with plenty of never seize to keep them from freezing up. When I performed my first oil change after I bought my LR3 I had a hell of a time getting them out. Second time with never seize, no problem.

I've done that before too...just used the old motor oil. Now I don't, I have an impact wrench now. :D
