Can tell you haven't been reading about our overheat issues.
Yes, if you allow the engine to get to hot too often, the motor can become a boat anchor.

2000 disco II gauge was hot for about 1/2 mile

So, now you are in trouble, how mechanical are you, how well can you follow directions? Allowing the temp gauge to run in hot does damage so quit driving it and if you want some help send me your number and I'll walk you thru what to check.
