Gentlemen. I just returned from a hunting trip and I am now rethinking how I "use" my iPhone 7 in the LR4. While out (LR4 and camper for base camp) we took a buddies F150 into the backcountry mostly and we used maps etc on our phones all the time. He used a mount for his iPhone 7 - this Kenu Mount and then we placed the iPad up on the dash and pushed it back against the windshield and it held quit nicely.

Got me thinking about daily use of my iPhone 7 Plus in the LR4. For years I have either kept my phone in my pocket or placed it in a cup holder. I ordered the Kenu Airframe but I just don't think its that great due to the bevel below our vents. Wondered what you guys are using if anything. Looking for something classy and sleek like the Kenu if possible.

Do you have a case on your phone? If so, I use something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IEWLIJC?psc=1

It's inexpensive, works fantastic (you can easily put the phone in portrait or landscape) and is hardly noticeable if you don't have your phone on it. It fits perfectly in the vent, which is a great location (IMO) to have your phone.

The reason I asked if you have a case is it works best if you can slip the metal plate inside your case. You can use double sided tape and stick it to the phone, but I prefer not to do that.

Putting a magnet on your phone is crazy to me. You screw the compass over periods of time and there are other reported issues with NFC. Most phones use a small magnetic device called a magnetometer to keep the compass pointing north. (also used for maps apps)

The OP said he was using an iPhone, but any Samsung owners that use Qi wireless charging would absolutely not want to put a metal plate between the phone and case. That would cause issues with the wireless charge.

It also screws with image stabilization in the camera for iPhone 6 and 7.

With iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone 6 Plus, a metallic case or magnetic lens could interfere with optical image stabilization.

I have been an electronics engineer for about 20 years now. Putting electronics near strong magnets has simply always been a no-no in my experience.

To answer the OP's question, I use a suction style holder similar to this one:

Mine is mounted over the gauge cluster hood, offset to the right. It needs to be re applied every once in a while because it is not a true flat surface, but works absolutely fine for me. You could find a way to route to the windshield with a longer charge cord hidden away. I have been lazy to go that route.

**EDIT**

Newer version of the one above:
