    Jacking Options

At home I have some aluminum long reach 3 ton jack from Harbor Freight that was about $80. Works great twice a year for winter tire installation & removal. Definitely not high enough quality for everyday shop use. OEM scissor jack will be fine if changing a tire on a solid surface like a...

    Another Defender hint?

Awesome! I have been so tempted to do the same but want to drive it first. My Defender HSE build is $78K which is just $10K less than my "plan B" build of a RRS HST. Already eliminated the D5 from consideration at any price/discount. Looking forward to seeing your video of how to change the...

    Two issues with my LR4

Same here...pedal goes hard overnight if temp is below 10 degrees or so.

    LR 4 Retired

Are the enormous silver door handles and center console trim real metal? That ugly silver center trim sure looks plastic. Never been a fan of A-pillar grab handles either.

    Another Defender hint?

LOL. We have potholes around here that are bigger than the sand indentations on that course. Wish I had a pothole spotter that could save me from ruining a tire or needing an alignment from pothole damage. A spotter was really helpful at this LR event I attended: IMG_1453 by PaulLR3 posted...

    Another Defender hint?

Still not sold on it as an LR4 replacement. Looks "cute & capable" but is it big enough to haul my family, luggage and ski gear? Looks smaller than the published dimensions. Really need to see one in person. More questions...Is it really worth the $80K and how many early adopter quality...

    LR 4 Retired

The issue is that many of us paid $60K up front to buy a new LR4 and now we're spending at least $5K per year on repairs and maintenance. If you picked up a used LR4 for $20K then those additional repair payments don't seem so bad. Also, I use my LR4 for work and it's fully depreciated. It...

    LR 4 Retired

^This will happen, depending on where you live. But there is a fix...Just saw an LR3 with 30K miles from Nantucket Island getting a frame transplant. So now the new frame should last another 15 years or so.

    LR4 upper tailgate randomly opens

Did you figure out where the water is getting in? I had a leaking roof antenna that eventually killed the back-up camera.

    Another Defender hint?

Agree too. With that tiny slit grill it looks like it has lips. Then there are those bumpy hood inlays that look like acne on the big nose. And the way the headlights are positioned, I'm not sure if it looks like it's rolling it's eyes or just plain cross-eyed.

Anyone had problems with Oil Pump?

Red Top Engine, I think you have the honor of being the first LR4 owner here with an oil pump issue.

    LR 4 Retired

I'm at 112K miles and spent about $8,000 on repairs & maintenance in 2019. Every time I put more money into it I justify driving it longer. But then there is that "what's next" feeling always lingering. I feel like my transmission is shifting differently lately and I don't want to replace...

    LR 4 Retired

Totally agree as I had fun shopping for a vehicle to add to our motor pool for my daughters. Started out looking for used vehicles but most that had modern driver assist features like automatic braking were the same price as new. Alltrack rear seat was too small, Tiguan's engine is lethargic...

Ticking nose or just ticking bomb?

Yes! This is it. I had my fan replaced and the noise was similar.

Ticking nose or just ticking bomb?

The LR4 is a noisy engine even when new so it's hard to diagnose issues over the loud fuel injectors. I will tell you that if your alternator is making that noise, the valve cover gasket above it may be leaking and dripping oil into the alternator. That happened on my LR4.

    Showoff Your LR4

I recently saw an LR3 from Nantucket Island in the same position getting a new frame. Only had 30K miles on it but 10 years of salt air & water dissolved the frame.

LR4 5.0 Chain Guides actual problem?

Agree. Person next to me at the dealer picking up their LR4 after timing chain guide replacement had a $9600 invoice. Suddenly my $2500 steering rack replacement seemed reasonable.

    LR 4 Retired

Totally agree. When I was picking up mine with a $2500 new steering rack the guy next to me was picking up his with a $9600 timing chain guide replacement. But I will tell you that at 110K miles, a new steering rack makes a huge handling difference. (and mine was leaking as well). These wear...

    LR 4 Retired

Welcome Troy! Excellent point and helps explain why people are moving on after paying $60K for a new LR4 then another $15K in repairs once the warranty ran out.

    LR 4 Retired

That's it! I couldn't explain what I didn't like about the Defender and "looks like a toy" is it. And the fact that my Defender build costs the same as an HSE-LUX D5 or V6 Range Rover Sport. Still so disappointed that the D5 SVX got cancelled.

    LR 4 Retired

There is a definite transition underway on this forum as original LR4 buyers are moving on and new members are coming in with their used LR4 vehicles. Funny how second owners have more "wrenching" skills and aren't afraid to work on repairs themselves. Same thing happened with the Audi allroad...

Skidding to a stop on snow and ice

One more thought if that happens again...gently downshift so that engine braking can help slow you down. (Move shift lever left and back on 2013 & older or - paddle shifter on 2014 & newer)

Skidding to a stop on snow and ice

Agree, tires are the problem. I'm south of Boston and we got about 6" of heavy wet snow yesterday. Drove my LR4 with the worn Michelin Defender tires still on and it was all over the road and barely made it up our steep driveway in snow mode. Then took out my wife's LR4 with Nokian winter...

    Share your most expensive repairs

Same thing happened with the Audi 4.2 engines. Customers used to complain about spending $1500 to replace timing belts as normal maintenance. So manufacturers switched to timing chains thinking they were "lifetime". But when these fail the cost is far worse.

I meant to add that the customer in front of me was picking up their LR4 after a timing chain guide repair and was complaining that their invoice was over $8000.
