Looking to buy this LR4, but rattle at cold start. Goes away when warm...

Are we ignoring looks for this discussion. I can accept the Toyota is likely more reliable. I just can’t stand what they did to the outside of the thing for any model past the 80 series. The 100’s were maybe tolerable, but 200s are just so damn ugly (to my eyes…no offense to any 200 lovers)...

Looking to buy this LR4, but rattle at cold start. Goes away when warm...

Hah…I grew up in the Detroit area and its the same story there. They love the salt. Cars used to rust out like crazy. Rust protection is better now, but still a lot more rust than we see in California.

Looking to buy this LR4, but rattle at cold start. Goes away when warm...

@equalizer: see post 11. Its my engine, and though I can’t say for certain how “good” it is, I haven’t had any problems with it so far. About 65K miles, oil reports look good, SC coupler and water pump has been changed out. You’ll probably need a few samples of sounds from different scv6...

Looking to buy this LR4, but rattle at cold start. Goes away when warm...

@Aboshi: These comments are a complete surprise to me. I’ve done a whole lot of reading on this forum and several other LR4 forums in both the US and other countries, but I’ve never seem a single report of a crank failure in the petrol engines. I’m certainly aware of the problems in the diesel...

Looking to buy this LR4, but rattle at cold start. Goes away when warm...

I believe this is the petrol (scv6) not the diesel (sdv6). I don’t know much about the diesel (though i heard of the crank issue), but the scv6 has been a pretty solid motor aside from the coolant crossover problems (same as the 5.0). Definitely no crank issues that I’ve heard of in the scv6...

Anyone running Tuffant steel wheels yet?

Before I went with compos, I inquired about the Tuffant et27’s (the 44’s were out of stock). Someone from Tuffant told be the ET27’s might have more rub than the 44’s but thought it would be okay with 265/60R18s (not sure about 265/65’s). Sent me a pic of his buddy with the 27s on an LR4 and...

Looking to buy this LR4, but rattle at cold start. Goes away when warm...

I think if they do the work and the sound is gone, you’re good to go. If the noise is still there, don’t buy it. I agree with everything your mechanic said - with those intervals, I don’t think you need to worry too much about other wear. If JLR was doing the service, they used the right...

Looking to buy this LR4, but rattle at cold start. Goes away when warm...

Do you actually have records of the oil changes (or receipts if he was doing himself)? 65K miles is really low miles for a timing chain to go out on a 2016 model (which had the updated timing chain guides). Makes me wonder why. If he wasn’t changing the oil and that’s the reason for timing...

Looking to buy this LR4, but rattle at cold start. Goes away when warm...

(Posted this before I saw the above post) I’d investigate a little further before giving up. Doesn’t really sound like a rod to me, but tough to tell from a video. Could still be the supercharger coupler. Uploading a video of my own engine on cold start for reference. I don’t hear the same...

Looking to buy this LR4, but rattle at cold start. Goes away when warm...

I definitely hear what sounds like the supercharger isolator (intermittent, sounds kind of like marbles), but that‘s not the loudest sound in your video. Not sure what that loudest clacking is, but doesn’t really sound like chains to me. Could just be the HP fuel pumps getting picked up more...

    P2118 Reduced performance

After PCV refresh, also check the breather hose connections: back of the PCV to the throttle body and the drivers side back of the valve cover to the air intake plenum (this one connects underneath the plenum and can slip off if it wasn’t put on correctly). Other lean code causes that come...

18’ wheel suggestions for my black 2010 LR4

Tuffant used to have two offset options in the steelies for the LR4. I was told one of the two offsets would likely accomodate the TPMS (can’t remember which one anymore). On either, you can use a steel strap around the center of the wheel to hold the tpms. I ultimately went with compos...

2016 LR4 Coolant Crossover, Water Pump, Thermostat Replacement

Just reading back through, it looks like you have not yet replaced the crossover. In my mind, it is much more likely that your crossover is leaking than your newly replaced water pump. That might have been the problem from the beginning. If you stick a borescope down into the valley (just...

    Thermostat outlet hose

Anyone know if the LR coolant is okay on brass? I think dexcool will corrode brass. Not sure if anything would come of it in this particular application (passage doesn’t appear to be small enough to get clogged with corrosion).

LR4 2016 engine sound odd or normal?

@John Harris What caused the check engine light? Low oil will give a different light I’m assuming (low oil level indicator?)

    Brakes

If its happening that many miles after install, it’s got to be warping from heat. I’ve read that drilled/slotted rotors warp more easily. I went with zimmermann - they’ve been fine. Could also be a caliper getting stuck/dragging and causing one of your rotors to overheat.

    P2118 Reduced performance

Not sure if you saw this thread - post 41: https://www.landroverworld.org/threads/engine-revs-high-upon-start-up.40662/page-5. Maybe also check your PCV valve if you haven’t done that in a while. It’s probably the single most common cause of the lean code, and so easy to do (though I’d have...

LR4 Drivers Memory Seat 'access' mode

Funny - I remember mine doing this when I first bought it, then it stopped and I wasn’t sure why. Just looked it up. The steering column adjustment knob that moves like a joystick to adjust the steering wheel apparently can also be rotated from a manual to auto position. In the auto position...

LR4 2016 engine sound odd or normal?

That sounds like the sc coupler to me. You can slip that supercharger belt off and see if the pulley has any free play. If it’s worn out, you can actually reproduce the sound you are hearing by just rotating that pulley back and forth a bit. There are a bunch of youtube videos demonstrating -...

Roof Rack Wind Noise Help !

Those tabs sticking out front (attachment for the former light rail) might be causing some problems. I can imagine those things catching the wind and vibrating like a tuning fork. You might try shielding them somehow - maybe somehow moving the existing air dam or using a new one that‘s a bit...

2016 LR4 Coolant Crossover, Water Pump, Thermostat Replacement

The oil cooler tube should have the seals replaced on both ends, so if you only replaced one, that’s a potential problem. They can also get into a crooked position when the pump is pushed on, and one forum member reported that one of the seals got twisted somehow, so it wasn’t sealing properly.

2016 LR4 Coolant Crossover, Water Pump, Thermostat Replacement

As for the leak, sounds like you’re leaking at the little elbow (Part #7) - if you’re saying you have another leak behind the pump, then its likely the tube that connects the back of the pump to the oil cooler, or the front crossover where it goes into the block. As long as you have a leak, I...

    P0087 Fuel Pressure

That’s amazing. Do you know on what basis the dealer diagnosed the hp fuel pump failure? (BTW, $3200 for the HP fuel pumps seems crazy high to me. A few years ago, that’s what I thought the timing chain would cost. Seems like everything has doubled).

    Thermostat Replacement and then some.

If it were me I’d just do the whole thing. I find half the battle is just getting the project started - I’d rather not do that part twice if I can get it all done at once.

    Extended Warranty

Sorry to hear it really was a seized engine. I was really hoping for a better outcome.
