Good Lord, talk about pretensious [sic] ! If you knew anything about me, you'd know I'm the farthest thing from "the spiritual and physical embodyment [sic] of Land Rover." I wish there were more cheap parts available, or American equivalents to the British blobs of rust we call engine...

First long road trip - A second Opinion

You got 16.4 mpg and are disappointed? Drive a 'Fender, or a mid-90's Disco with any lift....I get 10-12 and am surprised it's that high.... Also, re: seating position -- you're being too hard on it, it's a truck. If you want a car, buy a Lexus SUV, or an Acura MDX. Newfangled...

    Changing Front Shocks

Use a pipe wrench or Channel-Lock wrench to hold the shock body still, otherwise it'll rotate while you're loosening the upper and lower bolts. Best thing to do, IMHO, is to unhook the lower mount (nuts and bushings), then remove the shock tower bolts and lift the whole assembly out of the...

Check engine light on 96 Disco

Is it the Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon light? If it's the CEL, you've thrown a code which AutoZone, etc. can read for you. If it's the SES, do a search on this site for where to find the reset box.

Doesn't look like it, Mel...but if you still have it in the spring and I need one I'll let you know.... So far it's not sticking -- looks like chiseling the rust off the pistons had a good effect.

    Question on Error Codes

No. You have OBD-II, which requires a reader to plug into the port under the steering column. D1s through 1995 have the code display.

    Disco camping/sleeping

Depends on the method with which the rack is mounted. If it's on the gutters, it's a lot higher than if it's mounted to the factory rails, for example... Opinions vary but I wouldn't put too much up there for other reasons (COG, aerodynamics, etc.)
