4 wheel & locking diferential question

LOL -- it's a little disconcerting to do that, and have the truck trying to move forward with little lunging moves, and at the same time hear the ABS pumping away...

4 wheel & locking diferential question

Ahhhh, the "poor man's locker." I've heard tale of CV's and inners grenading from that in the wrong situation or with too much gas, so proceed with caution. IMHO, YMMV, etc.

Just drive faster up those slopes -- your truck can take it

4 wheel & locking diferential question

Yes. You have "open" axle differentials. This means that, whether the center diff is locked or not, the halfshaft with the least traction gets the most torque. If there is no traction (because of the snow) on the left front, the left front spins until you back off the gas or gain traction...

    Ummmm.....try www.obd2.com? They cover Rovers.

1996 Disco I rear view mirror

Remember basic splicing techniques -- intertwine the bare wires and make sure they're tight against each other. A better route (although requiring some movement in this case) would be to use butt-end connectors and tape.

    Ski Rack

Great aerodynamics? You're driving a milktruck -- with the rack on (no matter what kind) it's a milktruck with a cage on the roof. Go with something strong, and simple, and within your budget (probably in that order). Good luck with the factory roofrails, I hope those plastic pegs don't...

Nathan at discountrovers.com; ummmm.....you could buy an engine off of lrx.com or somewhere and use it for parts?

    Noisy Steering Pump

I used Quaker State PS fluid with "stop leak," and for the first four-month period since I bought the truck 3 1/2 years ago I haven't had to top the fluid off due to a leak and noisiness. Lucas is also a good product.

    Radio Codes

LOL Aaron! I get the "clean head" message every time I use the cassette adapter for my portable CD player (or the MP3 player). I keep putting off using the head cleaner because I just love that high-pitched beeping sound SO MUCH!!!!

    Overheating

Gurgling, IIRC, is air in the cooling system somewhere. Is it a leak? Check your hoses and connections. 174K miles! -- it probably has one or more rotted hoses or bad clamps, which would be exacerbated by sitting idle for long periods of time...

    Question -- New Disco Owner

For normal driving conditions you want the center differential lock lever in the far "back," far right position. The CDL light should not be illuminated.

    Won't go into gear

I wrote "front diff" earlier, and re-reading things I think it's either the rear diff or a CV up front -- depending on how you read his description of lifting the back end and having wheels that turn. Seems like, if they turn under power with the diff open, but he has no power on the ground...

    2 down 1 to go

I'd guess (not owning a CD changer) that the radio head unit isn't recognizing the CD changer because there isn't a connection between the two. That means checking the connection -- which involves using stereo removal tools to take the head unit out of the dash (don't have to hack apart the...

    new owner with problems

RE: the signals -- welcome to The Cult of Lucas! There are more weird things that happen with these British electrics than with any other make or model of car. Rover, Jaguar, Triumph, Aston-Martin, etc., all have crappy electrics.

    Won't go into gear

Sounds like a CV. Anyone else? Do you have CDL? If so, engage (lock) it and pull the front driveshaft, you'll have rear wheel drive and can narrow the problems down to CV or front diff. Then comes the fun part, where you get to tear apart your front end to replace one or both CV joints (or...

    tires again...

Try the classifieds ("Parts Wanted") section of this site, or www.lrx.com, or www.disccoweb.org, or www.disco2.com, www.roversnorth.com, etc. -- those sites all have classifieds / want ad sections that you can post in, and people are sometimes looking to get rid of 16's for 18's.

Just Bought a 98' Range Rover and a SRS Fault is indicated

Sell the Rangie and buy a Honda. Seriously, though, rethink the whole "beat it till it works" / "fix it with pliers" philosophy on the steering column. Getting the SRS light reset might be expensive, but it beats getting an airbag deployment in the chops for no...

    CDL for 2003

You should be bummed... Simply put, you want CDL in any situation with less traction. This can include (but certainly is not limited to): Hill climbs on loose terrain Descents on loose terrain Driving in sand/loose soil Driving in mud Driving in snow Did I miss anything?
