Need help finding picture of that LR3

Funny: Posting a pic of my truck next to that one  One side, a battered, dented, cut, unwashed and muddy lifted 1996, with mud tires. The other, that thing.

Oil light flicker when air condition on.

My oil light has been flickering due to low oil level from a clogged pickup tube in the oil pan. Yours could be from that, or from a wiring/ground issue.

newbie here - got some questions on buying a used discovery

1980's Toyota Land Cruiser  68 Series ex-MOD 109" Wagon  More seriously: 99 D1. It'll cost less up front, is easier to work on, and is probably the most likely to be reliable of the D1's. You'll have CDL, which is nice, and a lot of the other luxury accoutrements of the...

newbie here - got some questions on buying a used discovery

If looking for a D1, seek a 1998 or 1999. BMW controlled quality control and manufacturing, and the hand-built "close enough" tolerances were eliminated. Also newer, and more likely to have been better-maintained. My next Rover will be a Series IIa or Range Rover Classic -- I'll actually be...

    Monochromatic Mirror

For a while, Magna Donnelly was the parts supplier, and if you contacted them they would replace your mirror with a non-fluid-based model, for free. Do a search here, I know the thread's out there.

    Hardwire Valentine 1

I'm confused. Do you want to always have power going to it, so you don't tie up a power outlet, but where you have to turn on the detector? Or do you want the detector always to be on? Different answers to those questions.

Are there still curry hooks in LR3s, like there were in the D2?

    Alternator Replacement 2000 Discovery II

If it is anything like the D1, it's quite easy. Use a breaker bar or long socket bar with a 13mm (???) socket and turn the tensioner pulley (below and to the left of the alternator) to the right/clockwise. It should move out of the way and slacken the belt. Remove belt from alternator, remove...

    Tricked Defender

Looks a LOT like the Tomb Raider edition. Basically a stock D110 pickup with lots of bolt-ons and a snorkle. But a nice truck nonetheless.

Roto flex to U-joint & diff slack

They can be converted, too. I saw it somewhere and looked into buying a junked rear driveshaft and modifying it so my truck wasn't offline, but kept putting it off....

Looking at a '99 Series II Discovery...

Those leaks, I'm afraid, are likely to return even if they're patched up or replaced by the current owner. Assuming he/she pays for it, which is a labor-intensive job running hundreds if not a thousand dollars through a dealer. I had an extended warranty, which was junk. It was not through...

    Portable air compressor/Tire inflator

Don't go cheap. Tires with the interior volume of the LR3 or any other SUV will require a lot of air to refill, and you'll burn out a cheap compressor in no time.

Hi, new here. Educate me on Defenders

There are two versions of the Defender, each of which has multiple sub-versions based on features. The first is the 90, so called because of its "90-inch" wheelbase. This is a two-door truck available as a hard top or with a soft (canvas) top, which can be removed. The other is the 110...

    surf rack

On a D1 like yours the factory bars are strong enough for a board, but they're pretty flexy, so whatever's up there will bounce around. Plus, you're trusting the board to be held in place by four (or eight) little plastic prongs...I'd get the Thule bars and Thule mounts (they're the tallest...

    DI or DII???

My response about GEMS was what some people call sarcastic. Maybe I should've put a little "winky" emoticon there?

Purchased a Land Rover this weekend

Welcome! Michelins are, IIRC, the OEM tire on that vintage of Disco. Saw your post re: towing and the breather hose, glad to see you're already putting your head under the hood! When you tie that hose down, unhook the valve cover end and turn the hose upside down (so it looks...

running hot / water rushing sound

Could be an air pocket in the cooling system (they seem to be going around ). Is it hot on the top and cool on the bottom, or vice versa? Is the top radiator hose hot when the engine's been running or not? You can open the fill cap and run the engine with the truck parked on...

    DI or DII???

I agree, regarding the '04 being larger and having CDL. GEMS is the engine management system. There isn't a distributor -- a computer controls spark timing, etc., instead of mechanical devices. There's a coil pack between the engine and the firewall that sends sparks out through the plug...

    DI or DII???

A LOT of people feel that the 99 D1 was the best build year for the D1. BMW was in charge, and most of the electrical and other gremlins had been worked out. You also (IIRC) have BMW electrics and not Lucas. You also get the "benefit" of GEMS rather than a distributor (96 models on), and the...
