As you stated, you can expect tighter steering feel and response. I noticed it immediately.
+1 to bbuyer's comments - I had the rear swaybar bushings done at the same time. They tend to wear out about the same time as the front LCA bushings.
The initial customer demo vehicles have arrived at dealerships here on the East Coast. I visited two of the dealerships in the Philadelphia suburbs last Friday, Oct 21, and drove the 5-door. Coupes were also available.
If you are keeping the stock LR bushings (rather than upgrade to aftermarket polly bushings) then you would replace the entire control arm. Parts cost is a little higher, but labor is much lower.
Just had both of my front lower control arms replaced recently. You will notice the improvement.
Test drove the Evoque last week with the wifey. It exceeded expectations. This is primarily an on-road vehicle, even though it does have some level of off-road capability. Driving dynamics were very good - responsive steering, decent acceleration from the Ford 2.0 ecoboost motor, and...
MAF and T-stat are very common around your mileage (ask me how I know:) and will throw an amber check engine light. Need to get the code read to confirm. Both are relatively easy DIY replacements.
Oh, and I assume you reseated the gas cap already?
I"m not in SoCal, but did DIY the install and have a copy of the instructions if needed.
Note, there was a redesign of the A-frame at some point, so there are two versions. The primary difference is in how it mounts to the bumper.
Change your thermostat, if it hasn't already been done.
Some of the above items are part of routine maintenance (I.e. fluids). Others are done if/when needed (I.e control arms).
Could be a number of issues. I suspect that whatever killed off your old battery may now be impacting your new one as well. Possily the alternator is not sufficiently recharging, or there is a ground fault somewhere, potentially the starter soleniod. Can't really diagnose it remotely, you...
The recommendation to attached the negative lead on the dead car to the engine block is to prevent any spark. A discharged battery can leak hydrogen gas, which could be ignited by the spark.

The D100 above is a concept, and is not a production-ready version. Visually, looks a bit off the mark for me. Will wait to read about the mechanicals, if any details are released at Frankfurt.
LR is saying 2015 for the Defender replacement.

The LR3 has been on the market for nearly 7 years now. A number of owners have crossed the 100K miles threshold, and many more are not far behind.
For those who have "crossed over" to the other side, please share your experiences here, so that the community can benefit from your experience...
Funny that you mention the Audi. Took my wife to test drive the Q5 last weekend. I asked the salesman if they percieve the Evoque as a direct competitor. He never heard of it. I expect that will change very soon!
bbyer - thanks for the links, they are very helpful.
This looks to be a very common issue. Owners may consider proactively replacing. If the thermostat gets stuck in the closed position (rare, but possible) it could cause a blown head gasket.
I just did the DIY thermostat replacement yesterday. Thank you to those who documented the process.
Just wanted to add two items.
1) Putting the new thermostat in place was difficult due to spring pressure, as others have noted. After trying for way too long, I decided to remove the 3...
