you can change the park brake shoes without going into service mode. Just sometimes is easier if it is.
I would definitely check the lower steering column. There is a joint near the steering rack. This is a sealed unit and wears over time. Causing inconsistent tightness in the steering.

Ok, so to clarify... for the LR4, regardless of whether it is petrol or diesel, the gearbox changed from 6 speed to 8 speed from the 2012 model year.
This can also include some cars registered in 2011 as the model year is the factory based spec change rather than a drop dead date of December...
Ok, so you don’t state if it’s a 6 speed or 8 speed.
If it’s 6 Speed, your gear selector lever is likely to be seized and this doesn’t allow the cable to move position or it is stiffer than normal and can often spring back out of gear ( or in your case, not sit in Park correctly)
