Thinking about buying a 05 LR3 HSE with around 40K miles on it. I own a 96 Disco so am somewhat familiar with Land Rovers but wanted some first hand advice.

Is it true that the 4.4L Jaguar V8 in the 05' is better than the Ford 06' etc..?

What should I check out on this car before buying.....Recalls? Common Problems?

What upgrades would I start at first if I did by?

and lastly is there a Programmer to enhance maybe the MPG or performance and does it have a effect on the life of the vehicle?

Thanks in advance....First time poster so take it easy on me

I don't think there is a Ford '06 so I'm not sure what you mean by that. LR3s all have the Jag 4.4. I'm not aware of any chip to enhance MPG nor would I bother with one....this engine and vehicle is highly nuanced.

You'd want to check for worn bushings, differential "roaring" and leaky sunroof drains. Other things are prone to failure at least once like the rear hatch release mechanism, the thermostat, the MAF Sensor, the Brake Switch, the EPB Actuator.

Mostly little things, really...except for the first 3 I listed.

Keep in mind, these come in two flavors with respect to the rear differential, locking and non-locking so if it matters to you be sure to ask.

This is a great vehicle overall and you will be happy. Go ahead and change the diff fluids, and transfer case fluids if you purchase it. Check to see the front diff vent has been upgraded (easy and cheap).

There are two engines available, the V8 4.4L Jag, and the V6. If it has a V6, run !!

:) yeah i heard to stay away from the V6!! LOL

Thanks for the heads up guys, I will check into it to see if any of those changes were made.

Not sure what the difference is between the locking and non locking but i will look into that as well

There seems to be a great deal of confusion (mainly on my part) as to who built the engines for each year 05.....06....07...08. I was under the impression that in 05 Jaguar built the engine and when Ford fully took over in 06 they put in their own (Ford derived) 4.4 V8. I have found this merely stated in a few places but nothing solid. However I have know a few enthusiast who swear by the 05 because of this "fact".

Someone helppppppp

Well, I have the 05 with the Jag V8. Of all the issues I've had with the truck, the engine is not one of them. it's a quality item

HSE only comes with the V8 which is a Jaguar design engine in all years 05-09

The V6 is only in an SE model and is a Cologne OHC V6, a Ford design built in Cologne Germany for European cars. Avialable in years 05, 06 and 07.

Both are very reliable engines and about 80 horse power difference but the V-8 is heavier so the net horsepower gain is a little lower.

No programming really available that I have heard of (and I have checked into it) to enhance the MPG for the gas engine. Quite a few I have seen for the diesel models not avialable in North America.

The locking differential thing is about the rear differential. One option for the car is to have the rear locking differential that will lock both rear wheels together to get better traction. This is mostly used for off-road type scenarios.

Thanks Trynian, if I would have known they all had the same engine I would have gotten an 07 or higher. I'm pretty happy with the one I got though. As I said its a one owner 05' HSE 42K miles for only $19,600. I havent had a chance to check out if all the software updates and common problems have been addressed or if it has the locked or unlocked diff but I'm looking forward to getting to know the vehicle real well.

Can't wait to start getting it fixed up. It is pretty much all stock right now.

I have looked through the forums and done google searches but cant find a solid after market 4x4 accessory vendor. Lucky 8 seems to be the closet to what Im looking for but even they seem a little archaic compared to what you can do with domestic 4x4's

Are there any good magazines or websites that have all the goodies im ready to throw on my new toy?

Welcome to the club Turbo512. I bought mine but SE, close to the same price range but little lower. I will send you a list of things I did a check on and replaced as preventive measure and some needing attention. Keep us posted on your mods.

I ran into the same issue (aftermarket parts). There are a couple of pretty good sites out there . . . Lucky 8 is good (except why so many flashlights?) I also get parts from BPUTAH, RoverParts (AtlanticBritish, I believe).

A lot of the enthusiasts on this forum are a great resource for hunting down specific parts, what works, what doesn't . . . .but you're right, there aren't very many options out there, it takes some digging.

Re: Your recent venture . . . .I bought a low mileage LR3 V8 too, had some early issues with transmission sensors and a failed compressor. I bought an extended warranty with mine, which covered the labor and repairs . . . good piece of mind if it's in the budget.
