Trouble starting , diesel disco

OK, '96 Tdi, 2.4 injected diesel, RHD (based in New Zealand).

Key in, wait till diesel coil light goes out, turn key to position 2, battery gives it heaps of oomph, then a series of very fast clicks coming from the engine bay somewhere, and its a no-go for me, simply will not fire into life.

Symptons: we only use the disco once every couple of weeks, its low on fuel - but not orange light yet, (diesel), the battery is OK, any suggestions ??

Possible issues: starter motor, diesel injectors - (all of them??) fuel lines/pump/??

I'm at a loss, please help.

I would say either the battery isn't in the best of shape (check voltage with a load on it), or you have a corrosion issue going from the the battery to the starter, or worse a bad starter.

I would also just check over all connections at the battery.
