I just bought a 97 Disco and have an oil leak that seems to be coming from one of the valve covers. Should I replace the gaskets for the whole intake manifold or just the valve covers.

I read some of the archives and it seems that the valve cover gaskets are a main culprit for this type of problem, but just wanted some feedback.

I also noticed on the website for Atlantic British that there are several types of valve cover gaskets for the Disco 1. A plain rubber gasket and then a set that is labeled "New Type" that advertises to fix the leaking oil problem.

I am mechanically inclined and plan to do the work myself. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks

First go over the whole PCV system and ensure that it is working. The most common reason for oil leakage is a non-funtional PCV system. Invest in that before tearing into the valve covers.

Thanks for the advice. The PCV hose and valve were a mess. Cleaned them up with carb cleaner and then cleaned the whole engine with seafoam. I will clean up the engine with degreaser tomorrow and see if the problem is still there.

Alot of times, the valve cover bolts losen up. Re-torque them to 6lb.ft, clean the area well and see if the problem re-appears.

Ha dthe same problem with valve cover leaking all over the place and running down near spark plugs. I had it done and it s nice to park your truck without leaving you mark. The parts are cheap you only really pay for labor!

Hey MK, which PCV - the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system, or the Purge Control Valve?
(Someone got a shop manual <grin>)
