Have been painstakingly plowing this thread… Have decided 100% on the Compos and 90% on the KO2s, just torn between 265/65 and /60. I reject 285 as I do all kinds of terrain, not just sand. So almost done:), but still have a few questions to which I haven’t found an answer, or maybe just missed it:

- Does a spare KO2 265/60 fit fully inflated? Or at least to a degree allowing to ride if no compressor?
- Does anyone have a whole car picture of anthracite grey with a beige body like mine? I think TLB might...
- Has anyone had any issues with guarantee/insurance on account of having a non-stock wheel size?
- Has anyone tried a proper MT tyre and if so, in what sizes? Up to OD 31.5”, I don’t want any mods. I prefer to maximise sidewall over width (varied terrain). My current offroad tyres are AT Coopers and I have found them pretty good except uphilld in mud, hence the questions. (Well, I once had a problem in deep sand too, but that’s because I didn’t deflate, so that doesn’t count).

Will be grateful for all sugestions, this is a great forum!

A 265/60R18 will fit in the spare well, fully inflated, no modifications necessary. A 265/65, not so much (you should be able to squeeze it in partially deflated, and you will probably need to remove the heat shield. It will be a very tight fit regardless. After you jam it up there, make sure you can take it back down before venturing off-road...)

If you can find a true 18" mud terrain tire with an overall diameter between 31 and 32", let us know. I stopped looking long ago.

[…] It's really not that annoying to leave the spare tire warning alone if you don't have the tool, the message only stays on for maybe 10-15 seconds each time you fire up the ignition as a gentle "reminder" that your spare tire needs air, then it extinguishes. Nowhere near as annoying as the seat belt chime (which you can also disable, thank goodness…) […]

This just occured to me regarding IID, though it’s slightly off topic. I once had a lot of tilt on a trail and the seatbelts tightened and wouldn’t go. I couldn’t even adjust my position in the seat much. Can this thing work the belts, too?

Don't know what you mean by "work the belts"... If I am on a trail I prefer not to wear the seat belt, it can get in the way. As mentioned above, you can turn off the beltminder chime (and you don't need a diagnostics tool for that.)

I just made it through the entire thread and feel like there should be a badge or something that pops up congratulating me. About three weeks ago in the early posts I stumbled on a set of LR3 18 while reading and wasn’t fast enough to grab them. Now I’ve gone back and am considering selling current 20s for Compos as a friend suggested. Thanks to this thread I’ve learned a ton about tire and wheel size (and why it matters) in one place that didn’t seem as concise elsewhere.

It also makes me miss my D2 a bit. The first time I went off-roading was in Moab after driving cross country on OEM wheels and tires without a thought about heat shields, spare location and portable compressors. Probably blissfully unaware of potential problems too.

Depending on where you live, it can be nice to have a set of winter tires and 20’s are fine enough for that. Or, if like me you’d rather roll most mileage on highway tires then swap to aggressive treads for specific trips, you can try that as well.

My standard most of the time set is 18” Michelin M/S2 E load range 18” which I’ve actually tested on several trails in WA with very good results. This means that for many trips where you’re really just getting to places hit Mtn biking, camping, skiing, they’re plenty and would even be fine in Moab.
I put the BFG on when there is certain mostly mud or a lot of very backcountry rocky trail like in Colorado mtns or other places with too many sharp rocks.

The Michelin are way quieter, much better mpg, better in rain, as well as cornering at speed.

@jwest Talking about road noise...

I love my BFG TA KO2, but dear lord are they noisy. I swear they weren't this bad when I put them on. As they have worn over the last year, they are definitely noisier. Small price for an otherwise fantastic tire.

yup, the km2 are noisier by at least that much more again.

I never really noticed on the ko during the Disco 1 and II yeras because the vehicle itself was so loud to begin with especially with the rack. LR3/4 are so quiet that you start to notice all the things that you'd have never thought about previously ;)

Hi all, newbie here from the UK.
Great forum and an informative thread here!
So I’ve got myself some PD1881s on order and as many have mulled it over it’s tyre choice time...
Interesting that the latest posts report tyre noise from the KO2s having had them a while - seems a lot of the AT tyres do this.
So I’m also nudging towards the KO2s and can’t find a definitive answer on whether the 265/65 cause issues if one has the dreaded limp mode?.
Sod’s law says it would happen out on a trail and I don’t want to be stranded..i
I’m thinking worst case scenario in that the suspension couldn’t be raised in recovery mode with IID Tool or Easy Lift..
I’m ok with the other possible rubbing issues, just the limp mode scenario.
Any thoughts? Or anyone experienced this?
