Funny ... I did the same opposite direction. Found the exact 13 Lux I wanted from a Mercedes dealer in DC. Had been traded in and wasn't even on the lot yet. They wouldn't take a credit card but said they'd hold it one day. Drove to JFK, certified check in hand (no time to arrange financing), salesman picked me up at the airport, drove to the dealer at 11pm, he opened the place up, we took care of the paperwork and less than an hour later I was on my way back to NY in my new car.

Great story and congrats on the find. If it was listed on any of the carfinder sites I may have seen it but was looking for a darker color. My seller was located in Great Neck/Bayside and my trip was on 10/27. I was there for 5 hours by the time we wrapped up test drive, thorough inspection to make sure all electricals and systems worked, paperwork etc. The guys were classic NYC car guys and I was entertained by them for the duration so the time went quickly. I'm loving the "new" LR4 and have been getting a lot of compliments.

Is gas mileage an issue for you ? The 2010 -2013 LR4's are a little bit thirsty on gas. If you will be doing a lot of city miles around NY, I will recommend to get the 2014 upwards.

If gas mileage is an issue for you, don't buy an LR4. :)
I'll live with 1 less mpg and enjoy the extra 30 HP of the V8.

I was going to mention the same thing. The LR4 is tall, not wide. You can do it if you find narrow car seats, but it will be tight. You can also remove the 2nd row middle seat and use a 3rd row seat for one car seat. My kids are older, and love using the 3rd row seats, they feel like they have a limo.

We have three kids. Two in boosters and on in a britax. I removed the middle seat in the second row. The two booster kids sit in the back and the little goose rides behind the drivers seat in a big britax. We never need to fold the seat up to get into the 3rd row as the kids just walk right through what is now the second row captain's chairs. Much nicer and it looks better too.

The V8 is more powerful, but if you never owned a V8, the SCV6 will be fine. I'm just not a fan of the rotary shift wheel, eco-stop and mandatory running boards that came with the refresh in 2014. Reliability will be about the same for a 2013 thru 2016, which is pretty good. $2000/year in maintenance is realistic from my experience. If you have 15 minutes and a mityvac you can easily do your own oil and filter changes.

I don't think you'll have to worry about the eco stop. Ours never worked and after one repair attempt, I decided it was a really stupid feature and neglected to have them try again.

I live in Kansas City, also bought mine sight-unseen in Greenville SC. Flew there and drove it home.. The dealer (Masarati) sold me a warranty that has paid for itself twice over now- and I still have 32k and 3 years to go on it.. LCAs, new injectors, door lock, etc..

Mike

Bought ours site unseen from LA VW dealer with 7,000 miles on it. Flew in, drove it home to Seattle through Napa Valley of course! Great experience. I had a business trip in Cali, uber dropped me off at the dealership and I picked my wife up in San Fran at the airport.

Make an adventure out of it if you can.

I have 3 kids in the second row of a 2016 LR4. A booster, a Diono Radian RXT and a rear facing convertible. It’s tight but it fits. Some things to note with respect to car seats: 2nd row backrest angle can’t be adjusted and 2nd row middle seat doesn’t have latch bars. You most likely have to put the rear facing in the middle of the 2nd row because if you put it on the side, the front row seat in front of it will have very little legroom. Running boards make it easier for the kids to get in and out on their own. 3rd row headroom and legroom is phenomenal, but trunk space with the 3rd row up is horrible. Definitely feel safer with the height and weight compared to other SUVs, but of course, this is subjective. Like what other posters have mentioned, if gas mileage is a major concern, I would look elsewhere.

I got my 2015 Lux in April 2015. At the time, my 3 girls were ages 6, 5, and 5. For any new seat purchase, I recommend the Diono Radian RXT. You will will fit 3-across the second row with room to spare. In fact, I had two Britax Frontier 85 (convertible to high-back booster) which had an integrated cup-holder on each side and a Radian RXT in the middle and they still fit. There should be numerous posts you can search for if you want more info. The two outboard seats have LATCH anchors and you will need to secure the middle seat with the metal buckle-lock-thing. It's a giant PITA to install, so don't unbuckle this unless you have to. Once you have all seats installed, there is no easy way to get into the third row...best bet is lower suspension to "access" height and have the passenger(s) climb in through the rear. I always thought it was fine for occasional use.

I have had zero issues with engine and transmission. I have found people accustomed to the V8 generally consider it to be superior to the SCV6, but since you have never had one, you would be fine with the V6, which is the same situation I was in. Power is really good when you step on it...but it is a 5,800 lb vehicle and it acts as such.

I am in Northern NJ and honestly, the weakest link I have found with the vehicle (entire brand, really) is the dealer network. Your desired spend seems a tad low for the mileage, especially if you are looking for a CPO with warranty, but it's worth performing a good search. Agree with PaulLR3 on tires, brakes, safety, etc.

For what it's worth, I was on the fence for a while and finally leased my LR4 to give me an "easy out" and I will be purchasing it once it is up. It has been everything I wanted and need in a vehicle and even though you may never go off road, the roads in your area are bad enough that you will be very happy with the ride the air suspension affords.

Best of luck...

Thanks for this.
I have a Clek Fllo right now which is also very narrow but will look into the Diono Radian RXT and pair those up with a Cybex Aton for infant. I can live with limited third row access for now. Is it possible to fold down half the third row, let the passenger in through the rear and use the extra space for cargo?
It looks like CPO is a must for me as I want minimal headaches. I may even want to purchase a maintenance package from the dealer, although I'm not sure how that works - do you buy it for service at a particular dealer or can you use it nationwide? I'm also pretty sure I want a 2013 as may as well get the V8 and 2013 should be cheaper than the newer years. Also I don't think I'll appreciate the improvements like start/stop, no gear shifter, etc. Only question now is how many miles on the car is too many? 30k? 50k? 75k? I aim is drive about 10k miles/year and keep it until it dies or becomes a giant money pit. I see plenty of 2013s HSE nationawide with 50-100k miles but very few below.

My current vehicle is a 2013 but was actually sold to its original owner in January 2014. It had 30K miles when I got it a month ago and I considered that very low mileage; lower than average if you do the math. A 2013 with 40K to 60K would have an average number of miles and could still be a very nice find. Have fun using apps/websites like Carfax, CarMax, Cars.com, AutoTrader, and Carvana to run saved searches and send you updates when new inventory or price drops happen. That's what I did and it only took about a week to find my target vehicle. Coincidentally, I found it in the NYC area (Great Neck/Bayside) at an independent dealer of upscale vehicles.
