Hi,
I have a 2003 Disco 2 - Its making a ticking sound which someone referred to as a lifter problem. Can anyone tell me what I need to do and what this may mean?

Thanks.

Are you aware that some 03's have failing oil pump/engine issues?
How mechanical are you and do you have a good Rover mechanic you can trust.
This is a serious issue for you and needs to be handled ASAP.
If you want some more information, send me your number and I'll call you.

Thanks Mike,
Im not a mechanic by any means. I have a good mechanic that was recomeded to me locally. I was told to have it towed to his shop so he could run a diagnostic on it before he could tell me what to do which I had planned to do this morning. If you would like to call me that would be great. My direct is 615-885-0015.
Thanks!

Hey guys, I've a 2003 with a similar lifter noise. I can do small jobs like brakes and such, but not major engine repair. I'm also looking for a good Rover mechanic near Essex county, New Jersey.

There is a VIN range for the pump failure prone vehicles, do a quick search to find out if you're in it.

Also, the Discovery 4.6 has issues with cam bearings walking, that will cause a lifter noise only after warm up, but it will be fine when the oil/block is cool.

That's exactly what happens, the lifter noise starts once the engine is warmed up! What do you mean by"walking"?

I'll be blunt, but you may need an engine.

The cam bearing will 'walk' out of it's seat, and cause oil pressure to drop, you'll lose pressure to the rear lifters. I can't explain this next part, but I've seen several people send the block out to have a machine shop go through it, new bearings and all, but the noise will persist. I do not know if there is, and have not been able to find on inspection, anything 'wrong' with the block when this happens, but a short block is the only effective repair I've personally ever seen when this happens.

I am not condemning your engine, as I have not heard the noise, and it could be something else, but if it is the cam bearing issue, don't waste money trying to fix your engine.

Also, and don't take this as me saying everything is ok, but I have seen people drive for years with this noise, with no real adverse side effects.

Thank you for your candid answer Dave! I've seen two mechanics thus far, one says the noises are just the quirks of this particular year, another said "run away" just on the sounds it made as I pulled into his lot!
Do you know of any Rover specialist in New Jersey?

I know some of the guys at the dealers, but no, not any independent specialists.

These trucks can definitively make other, similar noises, but not many that will be as predictable as this one as far as coming in, but may be worth swinging by a dealership to see what they have to say. A lot of times with something like that, they won't charge any check out, just ask if a tech can take a quick listen to verify that it is a lifter noise, and not a valve tick or anything lower end.

Yes, I need an engine! What's the most cost effective way to go, that is I only want to do this once. I was quoted $22,000 at the dealer for a new engine. That's not a misprint, 22 thousand! I suspect that's to encourage me to buy something newer? I'm in love with those solid axles!
