Would you spend 1K CAD on this type of repair knowing there's potential damage to the engine?

Is the valve cover broken?
The VVTs can come apart and spray shrapnel everywhere.
I would fix it and trade it in real quick.

Yes valve cover is broken. Hmmm so maybe fix it and trade in right away. Would the new dealers guys figure out it has issues and not choose to accept a trade in for money, or something less to nothing?

If it runs good with no warning lights on, you'll be fine.

“metal fragments in the oil”…. you guys are braver than me. As I have done once on children's LR2, I’d replace the engine.
Fix it and dump it on an unsuspecting individual?? I don’t play like that.

This would be a trade in to a dealership who can make plenty of money on parts alone if they don't choose or cannot resell. I would never 'fool' an individual buyer.

So after fixing the valve cover, they found that a cam shaft bearing was missing and most likely the cause of the metal fragments and breaking of the valve cover. This would most likely damage the cam shaft and maybe even the belt? What else?
The car runs well but what else can I expect? Pulling the whole engine apart to see what damage has been done is futile and expensive. Based on your experience, what have you seen occur to the car following this kind of damage?

That type of failure to the cam sprockets are not uncommon.
A rattle on cold start ups that goes away after a few seconds is an indication of eminent failure.
I really don't see metal flakes in the oil.
Maybe change the oil a couple of times every 500 miles.
Best thing to do is send an oil sample to Blackstone for analysis.
