Cruise Control
Once I took the vacuum motor apart and re-greased and replaced the split vacuum lines my cruise worked and has worked since. Your right about the ramp switches, radio volume on the right dash pod. I thought the cruise engage switch symbol looked like a highway going under a bridge..... -

Machine Gun starter
I'd say it's the ignition switch which is a common problem with LR's. If your switch moves side to side it's getting worn and so are the contacts. -

Cruise Control
Probably a vacuum leak in the cruise system. Trace the hose from the bellows near your throttle cable at the plenum to where it "T's" at the drivers side inner fender. One direction takes you to the vacuum pump and the other goes into the cabin through the fire wall near your brake booster...
