Service light on, then off , in a couple of seconds . . .

Another update: Land Rover has decided that the problem with the car is a faulty computer. They have ordered a replacement which will arrive August 17th at the earliest. They suggested that it might not be safe to drive the car in its current state, as random stalling might cause an accident...

New owner - questions on Nav & hitch

How about painting the hitch receiver?

Service light on, then off , in a couple of seconds . . .

Thanks everyone for your replies. Here's the latest. Since the last time I posted, the car has stalled twice more. Each time the vehicle was moving, not idling. Each time it also started back up right away. My wife took it in to the dealer yesterday morning. I hadn't heard from them by midday...

Finally at the dealer, looking forward to see my driving lights...

Those lights look great. Congratulations. Is it just me or is the placement of the switch a little awkward?

    Running boards / side steps

My wife gave me the Quail Lodge outing for my birthday a couple of years ago. It was fun, but not particularly educational or challenging. If you want to learn how to drive offroad, there are better courses out there. I recommend Harald Pietschmann of 4x4ABC.com He's the real deal. He will...

    New Owner Questions

Here's the deal with the service menu. You can't get to it when the engine is running. To see it, push the start button without putting your foot on the brake. The nav display will come on, windows will work, etc., as though you'd switch the key to position 1 on a typical keyed ignition. Now go...

Service light on, then off , in a couple of seconds . . .

The engine light comes on as part of the lamp function check when the car is started. The incident I described is the only time it has come on when it shouldn't. And that was only for a couple of seconds.

Sorry. I mean the Engine Malfunction lamp. It looks pretty much like this:

Service light on, then off , in a couple of seconds . . .

Greetings all, In the midst of a 400 mile drive yesterday a strange thing happened. I was cruising along at 75 mph with the cruise control on. Suddenly the engine lost all power, as if it had been shut off. It was more abrupt than if I had just taken my foot off the gas. The Engine lamp went...

    Lr4 Brakes

I'll be happy to accept your rude and condescending tone if you will please cite your qualifications.

    Lr4 Brakes

. Talking about my former Disco II here, when I would go in every 11k and be told I needed pads and rotors, I didn't just take the guy's word for it. I called BS and told him I wanted to see for myself. I went back to the service bay and had the tech mike them for me while I watched, and...

    Little feelings about the LR4.....

I acknowledge that. In my opinion the issue isn't so much that it is a door - it's that it's hinged on the wrong side. Rear doors on Japanese (and British) SUV's hinge on the right, next to the curb, instead of on the left, next to the street. Of course, if you're in Japan or the UK they open...

    Little feelings about the LR4.....

I miss the window and seat adjustment controls being in the center, like on the Disco II. I think the two piece tailgate is a joke. I can't reach the front of the loadspace without climbing in. I think the tailgate should open like a door, and that the hinges should be on the driver's side...

    Lr4 Brakes

We're still under 5k miles with our LR4, and so not close to even a premature brake replacement. But we used to have an '04 Disco that needed pads and rotors every 11k like clockwork. And it was really irritating. This is not an issue of the brakes being "high performance." It's not the...

    LR Service - first experience

What time in the morning did you get there? The dealership in my area has loaners (renters) to offer, but if you want one of the good ones you have to get there before 9 AM.

    Anybody regret not getting LUX?

Damned. And I already filled out the JD Powers survey. . .
  17. CaptainSpalding

Anyone else get a JD Powers survey in the mail?

They're just trying to fill in the check boxes on their little form. I have participated several times in JD Powers surveys, but I don't any more. The survey has nothing to do with helping Land Rover to make the best most reliable car with the features that buyers want. It's about being...

    Anybody regret not getting LUX?

Hi Rob, That's not what my dealer told me. It would make me angry to discover that I was told the 20" wheels were standard on the LUX package just because that's how the one they had on the lot was equipped.

    Anybody regret not getting LUX?

I don't regret not getting the LUX package (steaming double-negative there = ruler to the back of the hand) mainly because of the stupid 20 inch wheels that come with it. The 19's are stupid enough already.

Sill Tread plates, side rails (steel), roof bars

Joe, I'd love to see pictures of your rack and sliders, if you'd care to indulge us.

    No auto relocking feature?

I just checked the Land Rover website, and Passive Keyless Entry is only available on the LUX. Here's a link to a nice article on the vulnerabilities of keyless entry systems.

    No auto relocking feature?

When doing my purchase research I thought I read about that being a Lux version only feature. I may be wrong.

    Off Road Paint Protection

Well. We all qualify for a trip to the looney bin for having bought a $60k "luxury off-road" vehicle. It's a bit of an oxymoron, don't you think? Even with the loppers and axes and weed whackers, if you drive off road you're bound to get a scratch, and if you go regularly, probably a dent...

Roof rails; short or extended - which one?

According to this thread, found elsewhere in this very same forum, both Yakima and Thule have options for the LR4 roof tracks.

Roof rails; short or extended - which one?

My wife used to have a Discovery II which she loved very much. When we got the LR4, we had the long rails put on mostly for the sake of nostalgia. The long roof rails are more reminiscent of the Discovery. This installation did not go smoothly, and you can read about it here. The...
