So having read all this and having decided that I was going to save for a 2020 Defender, I'm seeing some deals on 2018 D5s and thinking about maybe making a move on a diesel but reading so many bad reviews, what are you guys seeing in diesel reliability, real world fuel economy, etc.?- remember5

Lr3 or Disco I?
Everyone has great points. I've owned a Disco I, Disco II, and my LR3 and prefer the 3 much above the others mainly for the technology, looks, and it really goes like a mad man off road. I don't remember ever getting stuck in the Disco's nor have I in the LR3 but I am older and more cautious... -

The son works at VW and said that all their test cars have a kill switch so if something goes crazy it kills the electrics and the fuel pump. He had a pre series Atlas come through today for testing that had one on it. -

Possible Electrical Issue
I would hold up on the blower motor and do the freon charge. Keep in mind also there are 3 stepper motors that move the air vents around to direct the flow of air from floor to defrost and blended in between. I had the issue and replaced both motors on the right side and that cleared the issue... -

Key Fob Destroyed - Car is not worth cost of key - Alternative way to start?
Not to hijack the thread after replacing some front end parts I kept getting the red error and she would drop to the stops. I ended up running the recalibration routine with the nanocom and all is well. I think I posted the solution on here when it was fixed. -

Gnomad the old key will work if you program a new key fob. Discos had a limited number of keys that could be programmed but I believe the LRs can have multiple. I bought my FOB from the dealer and programmed it my self with the Nanocom, same as a GAP or whatever. I was at the point of selling... -

Control Arm bushings
I bought factory Genuine from Landrover Merriam and Goodyear put them on for about $400 but now they've stopped using customer purchased parts. To do over I would replace all of it at once and let them do the alignment. -

JWest the Nissan Patrol/Armada has a flip up tailgate. Having noted that, you said "serious offroad" and I always heard the Patrol was bad a** offroad but not sure how they are now. Videos of the Armada on you tube don't impress me although I would like to have an Armada for road trips. -

J West started a discussion on JLR elsewhere on here and I mentioned on there that as long as I've been buying British cars (1975 Spitfire and it was British Leyland back then) they have had financial troubles. It's a shame because they have such a great potential. -

There is a lot to be gained by purchasing a diagnostic stethoscope to pinpoint ticks and tocks in the engine.
