    Cooling System Replacement - Dealership.

I believe it. When I was doing mine, I was afraid of damaging what I was prying on, and what I was using as a fulcrum that I couldn't see. So I ended up using straps and making sure that the fulcrum was outside the engine bay on a wooden frame. Abundance of caution and all.

    Cooling System Replacement - Dealership.

Doing the job yourself is admittedly a PITA. I don't know how long it actually took me, but (for example) I had to create a jig that let me pull straight up on the supercharger, whose pins were corroded in place. I would guess it easily took me 8-10 hours in all. The benefit, if one is to be...

Third head gasket job- why are they failing?

If a head gasket with any treatment has failed since late March, either there's a different problem altogether or they're putting a lot of miles on the truck! The real test will be how it holds up over the next 100k miles or so.

    Coolant Tank / Cap Question

Maybe they were trying to make the cap a pressure fuse, and keep you from blowing out the plastic coolant pipes.

Zip kit and fluid change, now won't go past 5th

All good theories, for sure. I know this shop had contacted Sonnax and got a set of pressure and vacuum test procedures from them that he claimed the unit had passed, hence his theory that the issue was "further up in the transmission" and therefore not part of what he'd just been working on...

Zip kit and fluid change, now won't go past 5th

Well, I picked up the vehicle from this outfit yesterday and drove it the 10mi home. I'll have it towed the 35 miles to the transmission shop. I was driving VERY gingerly, on backroads and trying to accelerate slowly and keep it under 45mph.What they had described was a "failure to shift into...

I’m sorry to hear about your daughter. Prayers for her and for your family!

Zip kit and fluid change, now won't go past 5th

It’s going to a dedicated transmission shop when I get back to Washington, one that is intimately familiar with the Zip Kit and this tranny. I’m hopeful.

Third head gasket job- why are they failing?

Hylomar. That’s the stuff we used. I’d tried it on a couple of test pieces of machined steel, and it was really tenacious. It did seem to set with heat, though.

Third head gasket job- why are they failing?

I would treat this spray as a “last resort” kind of solution, and really check the heads and block for trueness. The spray is tenacious, and will be hard to remove from anything you get it on. But my friend was in exactly that situation, where he was about to get rid of the vehicle because he...

Third head gasket job- why are they failing?

    A) It's really great to have someone like @Rover Range who can weigh in on threads like this with real knowledge. Thank you! B) A friend had a diesel engine that had trouble with head gaskets, too. On the advice of an old German mechanic, I got a spray can of some blue stuff made by Rolls...

Third head gasket job- why are they failing?

Heads decked and all mating surfaces flat? Is there a retorque procedure that's supposed to happen after thermal cycling the engine or anything like that?

Zip kit and fluid change, now won't go past 5th

Agreed. Now I'm interested in seeing what this shop that messed up will be willing to do for me. They've got a hostage, after all.

Zip kit and fluid change, now won't go past 5th

Well, I talked to Columbia Roving, and they said they farm their work out to Marsh Transmission in Tualitin. Called Paul King there, and he seems to really know that tranny well. He, too, is REALLY skeptical about their explanations. Thinks they just messed up the Zip Kit installation. So I...

Thanks, @ftillier. Did you get an impression that any one of them might be better with transmissions in general?

Zip kit and fluid change, now won't go past 5th

So, an update on the situation with my 8-speed transmission. The LR4 is still in the shop. I had to fly to Michigan instead of driving, leaving the dog back in Washington. Gotta say I didn’t mind missing a 3-4 day drive across country. But it would have been nice to not HAVE to make that call...

Can't seem to be able to program homelink

I’d suspect a neighbor’s garage is using the same code. Maybe try re-coding your opener, then reprogram the remotes and car.

Zip kit and fluid change, now won't go past 5th

So...in preparation for a long trip (Washington to Michigan), I decided to have a local shop change all fluids, and while they were changing the transmission filter and fluid to go ahead and install a zip kit. I'd been getting occasional sloppy shifts between 1 and 2, and it's a 2016 with the 8...

Kings Cross Automotive in Vancouver, WA?

Anyone here worked with this independent mechanic in the Portland Metro area? Good mechanics? Avoid them? Someone better to work with north of the river?

    Dieseling engine noise

I think of dieseling as a motor that continues to run after you’ve shut it off. I assume you’re talking about knocking or pinging, aka detonation? If it actually is doing that, then yes, it can cause damage. But these motors seem to be pretty good at sensing detonation and retarding the timing...

5 codes no crank no start 2011 LR4

Just to be clear, if you’re using a voltmeter, you should see the same voltage on each end of that fuse relative to ground. If you see 12V on the battery side and less than that on the other side, your fuse may have blown.

    Cylinder 5 Misfire

It's impossible to tell (for me, anyway) how deep those vertical lines are. But the fact that they're there at all is odd to me, given that I can see hatchmarks from the machining still. So something caused that scoring via piston movement. Seafoam is very thin, and should basically drain into...
