Sounds like the mass airflow sensor. Fairly common, and relatively easy fix. It threw a CEL, so a dealership can quickly diagnose. -

There are plenty of other fish in the sea. Don't waste your time and money on this one. Especially when the seller tries to downplay a repair that potentially exceeded 75-80% of the vehicle's value.
