Way to manually engage/disengage the LR3's center diff/transfer case actuator?

Question first: 07 LR3 - If i remove the rear driveshaft, is there a way to "force" engage the transfer case actuator manually so the center diff still sends power to the front axle when the rear drive shaft is removed (perhaps by tricking the actuator into position somehow, or by using the gap...

    VVT / VCT Solenoid Replacement

Did this job last night. Nothing incredibly difficult, just somewhat time consuming. The solenoid looked clean so it must have just failed. I swapped it out and I did replace the gasket and plug o rings with new and used a little gasket maker in the two spots indicated in the manual. I also...

    VVT / VCT Solenoid Replacement

thank you both! i finally did find the actual procedure in the manual--i'll attach here. your instructions were exactly right--basically remove the valve cover, unbolt the solenoid, reverse the process. thanks again.

    VVT / VCT Solenoid Replacement

Hi all--have any of you ever replace the actual VVT/VCT oil solenoids in your 4.4 LR3 (not just the occasionally leaky seals)? If so, can you share what the process is? I paid for a subscription to Topix and made my own workshop manual but I can't find anywhere where it actually shows how to...

    LR3 Small Mystery Coolant Leak

i've been experiencing a similar thing. not sure if it's the same cause. i spoke to a seasoned lr mechanic and he said the cardboard gaskets in replacement pumps can leak, and to make sure you get one that is metal. the pump i replaced last summer from autozone (only one available at the time)...

    IIDTool and Keyfob Programming

The story behind this is long and complicated, so I'm simplifying it to keep my question concise. I had an LR3, I totaled it, and now have an old useless keyfob. I bought a new (used) LR3, and only have one key. I'd like to reprogram the old useless fob to serve as a spare for my new LR3. Can...

    2006 LR3 transmission fault

I had a serpentine belt go and when it blew up it ripped the jacketing off of the fan wires, causing them to short, and it threw a few codes including the transmission fault. The short caused two fuses to blow in the process. I fixed the wires and changed the two blown fuses, one of which was...

    Ash Tray Won't Close...

You can't just buy a new tray. They make you buy the whole assembly for like $150. There's a little plastic tab that breaks off at the back and underneath the tray. I removed the assembly, epoxied a new tab on with the right size and placement, and it stays in now.

    Expedition Rack Mounts

I have an LR3 with a Land Rover expedition roof rack. Other than t-slot tie down rings, i'm having a hard time finding compatible mounting hardware for things like fuel cans, hi-lift jacks, marston mats, spare tire, lights, etc. Any of you running this rack and what mounts are you using if so?

    Alternator - OEM or Aftermarket?

Another follow-up 10 months later--the reman oreilly alternator's voltage regulator (built-in) was dying. Interestingly enough, it passed the bench test. But I run a 12v fridge and a mobile ham radio, both which are sensitive to voltage drops and which automatically shutoff if the voltage gets...

    Largest Full Size Spare Tire?

Do any of you know what the largest tire size on an 18" wheel will mount and fit under the vehicle using the stock spare winch? I know 255/60/18 fits. Wondering about something like 265 65 18, etc. Thanks

    GPS when off roading

I use backcountry navigator pro from the play store (~$10). It allows you to download maps offline in advance and import kml files (gps tracks and waypoints) such as those you speak of from funtreks. the app takes a bit to learn, but when you do you'll realize it's really the best option out...

New to Land Rover's....Maintenance Issues on 06' LR3?!

Ooh, great to know. Thank you for passing that along. Yet one more reason to pick one up. Do you know if the iidtool has the ability to set the air suspension into tight tolerance mode? I'll guess yes (I've now learned not to guess against the tool, hehe). This would be especially handy when...

New to Land Rover's....Maintenance Issues on 06' LR3?!

Yes, without question, speed had everything to do with it. It was immensely fun. Just wish I'd thought to remove it beforehand. The spare underneath gives the valence something solid to push against when the high speed water "impact" forces the valance backward, preventing the plastic from...

    Where's the leak?

    Alignment: asymmetrical front camber specifications

Folks, does anyone know why the LR3's latest (as of 2012 at least) front camber specifications are asymmetrical? Left side nominal -0.15 vs right side -0.50. The rear camber specs are symmetrical. This threw the indy alignment shop for a loop, and he thought the specs were probably wrong, but I...

    Headlight bulb replacement recommendations

My LR3 headlight bulbs need to be replaced. (Standard halogen kit, not the factory HID assembly.) I've thought about doing LED replacements but haven't decided if I want to try them. (I tried an aftermarket HID kit which i didn't like at all.) Do any of you have bulb recommendations? Standard...

New to Land Rover's....Maintenance Issues on 06' LR3?!

Excellent question. I know the IIDTool enables you to configure suspension heights, but part of me doubts it can update the ECU to support the new compressor type. That being said, I don't have one. Someday, when stuff stops breaking (when unicorns return to earth), maybe I'll be able to start...

New to Land Rover's....Maintenance Issues on 06' LR3?!

@Houm-WA: I'm going from memory from over a year ago, but as I recall, I based my decision on the following reasons: The Hitachi was $100 cheaper, plus the ~$60 dealer ECU reprogramming fee. I have since found it for even less, around $560 (if ever needed again). The Hitachi lasted 120k...

New to Land Rover's....Maintenance Issues on 06' LR3?!

I bought mine--an 07--with 87k miles. I've put another 53k on it, a lot of those miles very hard doing extensive overlanding. Because the dealership charges so much for parts and labor, I generally do the work myself and attempt to find lower prices for parts--usually with great luck. Except...

Just bought a lr3-head rest question

Yeah, I suppose I could've been home watching another riveting episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians. It turns out I was returning to camp via Utah 313 after a long day of sight seeing and trail running with my 8yo son.

    Alternator - OEM or Aftermarket?

Yes, thanks for the reminder--the pulley was the proper size and groove count. I can imagine depending on what vehicle the reman was pulled from, the pulley may be different. In my case this was not an issue.
