    V8 short drive belt replacement

Got the new idler pulley from the dealer. Now come in plastic instead of metal :(

    V8 short drive belt replacement

$25 tool off Amazon worked a charm with the stretch belt. It seated it almost correctly, just had to apply some leverage with a large screwdriver against the outer belt edge while continuing to rotate the pulley to fully seat it. Old belt looked fine.

    V8 short drive belt replacement

Hey, thanks. Yes I did look at that tool. Ordered a different one. Will see how it goes :)

    V8 short drive belt replacement

Thanks for the diagram. Longer belt replacement no problem. Its the short belt off the crankshaft I am referring to

    V8 short drive belt replacement

You have done that on an LR4? The new (LR) belt looks too short, plus would worry about cross threading the bolts?

'11 LR4 lower contol arm drama...

Its a pretty clear diagnosis. Going slowly if you pulse the brake pedal you will hear clonking. Mine needed replacing after 50k km or so. There were no other symptoms other than the clonking. Fairly straightforward replacement job, the biggest pain being that a lack of antisieze applied the the...

    V8 short drive belt replacement

Following on from my 'water pump failure' post below. So the serpentine belt is showing cracks, so am replacing it while replacing the broken idler pulley. I have a new short drive belt, the stretch fit one. I offered it up and it looks woefully short. Before I cut the old one off (looks okay...

'11 LR4 lower contol arm drama...

For early LR4's, mine is a 2010 you DO need to drive the axle shafts back to get sufficient clearance. This was a pita on mine requiring an air hammer. Trick is to raise the hub a few inches before driving them inwards

Does this sound like a failing water pump?

Found the problem! The RH upper idler pulley bearing is shot. Its totally off centre with just the belt tension holding it on

Does this sound like a failing water pump?

So if I remove the fan clutch assembly that still leaves the pulley in place. Is it not the pulley bearings that would be failing?

Does this sound like a failing water pump?

But the clutch bearing assembly will still be in place, so will presumably still make the noise?

Does this sound like a failing water pump?

Update: I grabbed the plastic fan and wiggled it hard. There does seem to be some wobble, so bad bearings / clutch?

Does this sound like a failing water pump?

So my wife reported "the car is making an odd sound" when she drove it today (2010 V8, 180k km, new engine at ~80k km from LR). I just went out and it is making a horrible screech-grinding nose from the fan area. Revved it a bit and no change in noise. Does this sound like the water pump...

    Brake bleed question

So after noticing that it was 3yrs since last brake fluid change, I proceeded to complete it today, ignoring Land Rover manual procedure. Used a mityvac vacuum gun on each corner. Worked fine and replenished the system with 1.5L of DOT 4. Two things I noticed: 1. When I sucked out the old fluid...

Finding the "Sweet Spot" (Statistical Failure Rates)

Oh that sounds depressing :) 2010 with 106k miles and its our daily driver. Nothing I feel like replacing it with so on we go.

    Slack seat belt tensioners?

So, my 2010 has had generally slack seat belt tensioners since we got it at 60k miles, witness the scarred passenger interior door trim from the buckle getting slammed in the door. Have made do with spraying belts periodically with silicone spray to improve slipperiness, but effectiveness...

Looking at LRs at around 100'000 miles - I'm planing to change the following....

Can probably add the air suspension compressor to the list. Either rebuild old one or buy aftermarket. Mine just went at 100k miles. Not that pricey (aftermarket) and straightforward to replace, although bolt access a bit fiddly.

Looking at LRs at around 100'000 miles - I'm planing to change the following....

I would add front and rear cross over coolant pipes to the list for sure. They go brittle and can self detonate resulting in catastrophic coolant loss. Would consider doing hoses at same time. Front lower control arm bushings fail every 50k km or so. You will hear clunking, but you can drive...

When is it time to say goodbye?

12 months after starting the thread, I just did my 2022 taxes. Comparable maintenance costs to last year of around $CAD5k. That did include $1,500 on tires though. Nothing major broke in 2022, money spent on new compressor, tailgate switch repairs, tow hitch and harness, 3rd brake light...

When is it time to say goodbye?

I would agree that my 2010 has always been a pleasure to drive. In 5yrs of ownership and 70k km it has not been cheap to maintain even with myself doing most of the work, but has not stranded me ever, and I still love it!

    Dreaded rear hatch actuator issue!

Took the latch out and lubricated the hell out of it. Still catching midway when opening, so new latch ordered. $CAD 55 off ebay locally vs. $CAD 140 from dealer.
