A/C compressor Shot????

SO now that I have the the new fuel pump I can actually drive the Disco with the A/C on but now when I do I can hear/feel a sort of dull grinding or vibration coming from the A/C compressor. It goes away when I turn it off.

What I'd like to know is replacing the compressor a DIY job. Can I just unhook and remove the compressor and have it rebuilt and then replace it and charge the system with Freon from the local NAPA.

Can the compressor be rebuilt? If so where in SoCal can I have this done? If not where can I geta replacement for cheap?

G,day.
I had a similar problem recently but I didn't recognize where the noise was coming from.
Checking under the bonnett showd nothing out of order !
I continued to drive it, then the commpressor seized, the engine ( V8 )
overheated and the piston rings collapsed on all 8 cylinders.
I am in the process of rebuilding the engine.
Fortunately it had only done 80 thou so I can put back together with
a set of standard rings and big end bearings.Heads weren't warped so it only
needed a valve grind. I had the injectors checked and all OK.
I should have it back on the road next week.
I was told that the compressor cant be repaired so I will replace it.
Bugger.
If you own an alloy V8, keep your eye on the temp gage !
I am doing the work myself so parts have only cost $1500, a repair shop
would have charged me $5000.

I was also wondering if the clutch might be shot and therefore easily replacable??
