Just because they are new plugs, don't assume they are all good. Years ago I swapped out the distributor and installed new plugs on a Series. I spent hours figuring I'd messed up the distributor, until out of desperation I did some testing and found 3 of the 4 plugs were bad. No wonder it would barely run!
Also make sure you have all the wires going to the correct plugs and all the new wires are good. You didn't get any gasoline on the dist cap did you? The high carbon content of gasoline can make the bakelite electrically conductive. You might want to look around and make sure you didn't knock loose any vacumn lines.
