What are your opinions, LR4 or Range Rover? What made you choose the LR4 instead of the Range Rover (not talking about the Sport)? Was it cost more than anything? What are the plusses and minuses or each?

Hi,

Here are my thoughts on the two, this is only my perspective.

For me, there used to be a huge difference when you jumped from a LR3 or older Discovery model to teh Range Rover. The RR was really polished inside and out. You could really see the nicer detail in the cabin. Overall, it just seemed like a nicer place to be. I can tell you with the LR4, the gap got narrowed quite a bit. I still think the RR is overall nicer, but I really don't think the LR4 in LUX form gives that much up to the RR. Now that the LR4 has a lot of the design elements on the outside that match the RR, most people can't tell the two apart. Not many people in my arrea have Land Rovers, so they call mine a RR by mistake most of the time.

My personal purchase was kind of multi faceted. I didn't have the money to spend on the RR. In fact, the LR4 was a bit of a stretch for us. I can tell you it was quite a splurge to spend $60k on a vehicle for us. My wife has a Lexus that we purchased new in 2007, and I really thought that would be the most expensive car we ever bought at $42k.

The extra room in the LR4 was the key for me. I have three teenagers, so the extra seating was required. Even though two of them are driving and we don't go that many places as a family, we still take family vacations where we need to have the third row of seats. Just driving to Omaha to catch a flight with the five of us and luggage, it's nice to have the size of the LR4.

I wanted a premium vehicle, and needed the space and offroad ablility of the LR4. I hunt, mountain bike, trail run, adventure race and such. The LR4 was a great match for our family.

The RR is almost double the price of an LR4 if you want all the options you get with the LR4 Lux with vision assist, etc... RR has no third row of seats. IMHO, the LR4 looks better. If you have the Money to burn and do not need the 3rd row of seats and like the prestige of having a RR then by all means go for it. If I had the money and did not need a third row, I would have definately gone with a fully loaded RRSC!!!

Yeah, I think you guys are both right....the 3rd row seat pretty much sets the LR4 apart from the RR. I like the idea of having the 3rd row in case of out of town company or whatever. And you're right: a fully loaded LR4 really closes the gap between the two vehicles.

All things considered, I sure wish I could have gotten ventilated seats in the LR4 like the RR has. I would have also liked the super charged engine. But I'm sure the SC would have pushed the price out of my comfort zone.

I think this is an apple to oranges comparison - they are two very different LRs and that includes build and cost. Personally, I want both. ;-)

Rob,
I had ventilated seats in my lexuses and IMO they are over rated. Unless the system in the RR is better. I live in new england so I may not have much use for it most of the year. The heated seats and steering wheel are a must up here.

I love both the RR and LR, though I really resonate with the heritage of the LR version vs. the RR, which is great because the RR is a bit too much money for me. For some reason, I am just not into the RR Sport, as it just doesn't "feel" right to me. I thought about it for a few minutes and like the 2011 model, but just not enough to actually buy it.

If I had the money, I'd definitely go for a RR Supercharged in a heartbeat. That is a hot car and I see a lot of them in my town. Unlike in some areas, I see a fair amount of RRs and LRs on the road - at least 3-6 a day or more. When I started thinking about a LR again a couple years go I just was NOT into the LR3. The LR4 is leaps and bounds above that in interior style and performance, and I definitely believe closes the gap between the RR and LR more than ever. I sat in a RR at the dealership and really gave it the look over, and the fit and finish (though a bit more stately in the RR) is very similar to the LR4. I definitely feel the LR4 has better visibility and more overall room.

In the end, if I had the money, like the Count said, I'd have both! :) Haha!

Cheers, David.

I live in the plains, so having the heated seats and wheel are really nice in the winter. Summers here can be fairly brutal too. It's not uncommon to have temps well over 100 and humidity in the upper 80s to boot. That is where the ventilated seats would be nice.

My wife has the ventialtion on her Lexus too. It's not the most powerful system, but anything is better than nothing.

I really can't see any reason to get a RR other than the prestige of having it. Let's face it, unless you really have $110K to throw away, you're not going to off-road it like it should be off-roaded. The LR4 is probably the ultimate Land Rover at this point. It truly is a luxury vehicle with off-road capabilities that are comparable to a Jeep. There aren't too many vehicles out there that boast a go anywhere attitude and actually deliver. With the LR4, and I only have the HSE with the HD and CC packages, you get a powerful engine (same power as the old supercharged engines), same platform as the RR, more cargo room, more head room, 3rd row of seats and of course trick looking LEDs in the front. What do you get in the RR that you don't in the LR4?... maybe softer seats?... maybe a little nicer finishes? But is that really worth an extra $30-50K? Not in my opinion.

If you're toying between the two, check out an LR4 HSE LUX and pile on the options. While you're at it, get a couple roof racks, a bike rack for the tow hitch, some new all weather mats, a Johnson Rod lift, a winch, some off-road lights and I bet you still won't spend as much as a RR.

But hey... maybe you're David Beckham and just DGAF
