Looked through the existing threads but did not turn up anything on this one.

Took my 2008 LR3 into the dealer yesterday for a few minor things and also to have the brakes checked out. Have been hearing a metallic scraping/screeching sound from what appears to be the front brakes but not sure. The sound is not consistent but is most prevalent in the morning pulling out of the garage and when pushing the brakes to a complete stop (not hearing it when applying the brakes generally when slowing down just when coming to a complete stop and then not even all the time). The dealer checked it out and came back saying that the sound was 'normal' due to the metallic nature of the braking system and the sound would be worse when the car has been sitting for longer periods of time and especially when there is high humidity in the air. This seemed odd to me since every other car/truck I have had when I hear that type of screeching/scraping there is usually an issue with the brakes, most times with the pads or rotors. The pads (both front and back) were replaced back in October and the truck has less than 1500 miles on it since that replacement. They checked the pads and rotors and had the car most of the day yesterday trying to determine if there was an issue and came up with everything checking out OK.

Has anyone else had this with their LR3? Does the explanation of 'metallic nature of the braking system' sound reasonable or do you think I should have it checked out elsewhere to be sure?

I've had several cars that do this, especially in winter or when it's really humid. The brake surface gets a layer of corrosion on it in a few hours after parking. The pads then "clean" the rotors as they turn, scraping sounds entail. If you get on the brakes reasonably hard at your first stop sign, the surface is clean and the sound is gone.

Reach through the wheel openings and feel the disc when it's sat overnight, you will feel the surface corrosion, in my STi and BMW you can see it clearly, and it's really bad after a couple of days of freeze/warm cycles (like in the airport lot).

I would not worry about it.

Thanks for the reply, have heard the same from others I have talked to so I gave it some time to see if there was improvement and things appear pretty much the same. The sound is definitely worse in the morning (or after the truck has sat for a while) which is probably the rust/corrosion cleaning off. Annoying, but I can live with that. My bigger concern is that after driving for a while the noise goes away except for when I come to a complete stop and push the brakes full. When applying the brakes just to slow down or in a turn there is no noise, but it is pretty consistent when coming to a complete stop. Sometimes louder and sometimes not as noticeable but does not seem to be going away even after driving for some time. Could this noise be something different? or just a result of the OEM pads and the setup of the braking system. Have since found some other threads that claim to have had the same issues and switched to ceramic pads and did not have the problem after that (however the ceramic pads seem to have a short life). Thanks for any insight.

I also had this similar brake noise problem, and my auto mechanic told me that it was due to a bad brake drum and I needed to replace it with new one.

Not sure if you got new rotors installed but if so, there are metal "shields" on the backside of the rotors that could also be rubbing. I can't remember what the purpose of them is but I just had new brakes/rotors installed and the day after the brakes started making an awful sound because the new thicker rotors were rubbing. The sound/rubbing was not consistent at all so I figured it had to be the shield, sure enough it was. Its a sheetmetal disk so all you have to do is press on it with a large screwdriver to flex it back away from the rotors. Hope this helps!
