My DII never made an unscheduled visit to the shop prior to 60K. Recently some big things have broken. As this is a truck I plan to keep around, I'm looking for insight into some potential other problems that may be lingering that I might be able to catch.

at 62K, a rodent ate the engine wiring causing 5K in damage.

at 64K, I got a new engine. It was blamed on a bad spark plug wire. The cylinder with the bad plug wire basically overheated, and the sleve slipped.

At 67K it started vibrating/hesitating when given enough gas to accelerate, but not enough to downshift. The dealer replaced a throttle body gasket, and apparently found another bad spark plug wire (I think that was odd?). They also found that the drive shaft was coming apart which if not caught in time would have taken out the transmission.

My questions;

1. Has anybody else lost a drive shaft in a DII that has never towed anything or seen the offroad?

2. What is with the spark plug wires being bad. I could see the first one being worn, but not enough to destroy the engine. What are the odds that the new "bad" one damaged the new engine?

The truck is under warranty until 100k - looks like that was a good buy!

I've seen your problem many times on DII's, the driveshaft uses i think a grease fitting and they like to occasionally pop out and take out a tranny, and i was reading about a gent on discoweb who also lost his engine. Count your blessings; I'm getting one of these soon for my 99 Discovery II as insurance, a way better driveshaft option than stock imo >

In your opinion (without seeing the vehicle), could the vibration from the drive shaft failing cause any damage to the transmission?

I noticed the problem 100 miles into a 2600 mile trip (Texas to MN and Back). Nobody would look at it along the way, and when the tech at the dealer saw it, he said he was surprised the truck made the 10 mile trip to the dealer.

I just posted a message 18/01 and then noticed your message- refer to the one i posted. I have a Disco 11 2002 V8 - at 60k I had vibration on accelerating & then my driveshaft broke taking out the transmission with it. I've had the transmission replaced under warranty but the vibration is still there!

Yes, in my opinion the driveshaft problems could have made some more tranny problems for you. But LR will never admit to that, I suggest since you've replaced your engine already u should just take the leap and get a custom driveshaft from Tom Woods. I've heard of people loosing their tranny completely when the shaft's pop-out, even an engine although that is not common. Don't see where else the vibration could be comming from other than mounts, have you had those checked as well?
