I was wondering if anyone out there can advise me on a noise which has appeared on my 2.5TDi. Basically when I start the engine first thing from cold, there's an absolutely horrendous screatching noise which seems to come from just behind the main pulley head. After about 5 mins , the noise seems to disappate.

My mechanic can't sem to put his finger on it, and I'm concerned that somethign catastrophic is happening in the background which i should sort.

Anyone got any ideas.

Cheers Disco Novice.

Sounds to me either like a bearing going bad (possible in the pulley) or you have a loose belt and it is trying to get traction so to speak.

Well, if it is a bearing, then either fix it now or wait till in grinds to a stop. (I would prefer now, myself). I would check this with a mechanics stethiscope.

If it is the belt, easy to find out. either buy some belt dressing (basically soap and water) or make some and pour some on the belt when you first start it, if it goes away, then it is the belt and you just need to change it.
