We all know the transmission is a little slack-ful and clunks or clonks or whatnot from D to R and vice versa. I was experimenting earlier and I was able to drive in such a way as to avoid this condition. Say you start up the truck, and you put it in reverse, usually it is ok with this, but when you then stop with the brakes and shift into N then D, it might clunk sometimes.
Well, I noticed that if you are in reverse, then right before you touch the brakes to stop, you put it in neutral, then use the brakes to stop and shift into drive, the transmission did not clunk for me. The same said if going into reverse after using drive for awhile, shift it into neutral just as you are putting on the brakes and when you select reverse the clunk should not occur. I do not know if this was a freak day for my disco1 or what, but today I did this driving technique and did not experience the clonk. Basically, I just think that by putting it in neutral and then stopping, when you select D from R it allows the transmission to unwind and the teeth on the gears to engage better. I just figured that when you stop with the brakes maybe the transmission does not settle in properly and the clonk occurs, but by putting it into neutral and rolling a little bit before you stop to change gears, it lets everything work out.
I would hope that this helps out some others with the sometimes violent R to D and D to R engagements, sure it is not a 'fix' but I feel that if it is not shuddering and clonking that it must be better on the parts overall and might prolong the life of our trucks. Hope it works for others, if you think my theory is wrong/dangerous please let me know, if it works for you then please let me know, this would be excellent if it is a way to 'eliminate' the tranny shudder/clonk.
So....*put in reverse*....backing up backing up....*put into neutral a split second, or simultaneously to->apply brakes to stop before driving forward again*...*stop truck*...*put into drive*=no clonk?
from drive...*slow down to where you normally would stop, before backing up*...*put into neutral a split second, or simultaneously to->apply brakes to come to a stop*...*stop truck*...*put into reverse*=no clonk?
The catalyst to the whole thing is that you should roll a few feet forward or reverse in neutral before actually stopping the truck and selecting D or R....
