Well I just got my 97 Disco this past Saturday, thus all my questions so far. I did a search and came up with a few items similar to what I'm hearing but not exact.

What I'm hearing is a sort of vibrating noise (w/o the physical vibration) when I let up on the gas pedal. It is speed related and goes away when the truck slows down to 15km/h or less. I can't pin point the exact location of the sound, whether or not its from the back or front. I changed the tranny fluid as soon as I picked up the Disco, but have yet to change the transfer case oils.

Should I be looking forward to an expensive repair in the near future, or is it something that is unbalance (thought I read something about the drive shaft being unbalanced).

Thanks in advance, I hope I was descriptive enough.

Cheers,
Jeff

When you changed the tranny fluid did you change the filter also?

No I didn't. I took it to Mr. Lube and they did everything. I don't believe they even asked if I wanted the filter changed. BTW, when I had the Disco inspected by a certified mechanic, he said the tranny fluid was very very old and foaming. I guess I should have done the works including the filter. Could this cause the sound I'm hearing?

Thanks.

Check the differential oil levels in both front and back. Take the screw on cap off and stick your finger in. Should pull it out full of gear oil. If not get some 90 weight gear oil and about a foot of rubber tubing to use to fill up each differential until it starts to drip out of the fill hole. Double check on the correct oil weight but I think it is 90 weight.

I had a wirring sound when I took my foot off the gas on my 97 Disco. Unfortunately my noise was caused by broken teeth on one of the gears in the rear diff. Had to put in a new rear end.

Good luck.

The diffs I would just go ahead drain them and change all the oil. Yes its 90 weight.
