I know for the next car I want something leather, 4wd, and looks nice. disco 1's, among durango's and grand cherokees popped up. if im working with a 6-7,000 budget, would you guys suggest getting one of these cars? i can fix anything myself, so maintenance and tune ups isn't a big deal.

in the other thread there were so many issues i saw with this car, im afraid to get one.

Go check out the Grand Cherokee sites if you think the Disco is bad....

Durangos are great, but not the best off road IMHO, and they get worse gas milage.

I paid 9200 for my Disco 3 years ago, and other than upgrades and basic maintenance and tires I have/would have spent less than $1000 if repairs over the last 3 years. I am factoring in the things that needed fixed that I upgraded (if I had just bought OEM style parts)

I was concidering the same - Disco or Cherokee (solid front axle model)
Disco is a much better ride and look - after owning a Jeep Wrangler for the last 6 yrs (which only has a shorter wheel base and same supension as the Cherokee) and then test driving the Disco - there was no decision to be made - not to mention just the dam seats are so much more comfortable
( and yes I have driven a Cherokee)
I picked up one (98 Disco) with 62k for 7300- needed front tires -
good luck

Do not think that the Cherokees are free of break downs. We have several of them in our company (V8) and **, my God, I tell you, not any better than my Disco. The Durando has a lovely body but it consumes as a Kenwood truck and they are not that long on the market to prove their durability, due to the big block, they got the horsepower to keep you flying. If you can fix anything yourself, the disco is a good selection. If you live in the US, probably US Cars are cheaper than the UK parts which is to be considered.

Cherokees like to grenade transmissions. My brother has been through two of them in 5 years (and that's NOT offroading one mile in that time, just highway miles). Plus, they are made by Chrysler, which ain't the most reliable US maker.

Anyway, you take your chances with any vehicle of the age where 6-7K is a realistic price. I was almost literally minutes away from buying a 1998 Durango when I found the Disco I bought, and I don't regret it one bit.

I did not know there were any reliable car makers in the US?
