Hello all, I have a 01 Discovery with 65,000 miles on it. During my last dealer service they said the timing cover gasket needed to be replaced, I haven't noticed any coolant leaks, and it would be $700.00. I really don't want to pay $700.00 dollars to replace a $20.00 dollar part and I am pretty confident I can do it myself, with the help of some friends, but was wondering what you all thought. Will this be a long job, are there good instructions anywhere, do any of the "manual CD's" you see on eBay provide good information? Or should I just depart of my $700. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Joe

I have the Workshop Manual for D1 at home. I'll check to see if there's a section on that part in there -- presumably if it's owner-repairable for D1 it is for D2.

Seems like a long but doable job, they just use special tools in the manual to get some stuff out which I guess would make it easier, but who knows. But yea doesn't seem like a quick diy, hope I'm wrong. :) Give me about an hour or so and I'll see if the rave cd on ebay is the same as the hardcopy, downloading it right now.

Looks like you have to remove an awful lot of stuff to even get to it. Depends on how much space you have and how much time you have. You're basically going to be taking the front end of the engine off to replace a gasket that you don't know is faulty.

I just had this done on mine, with 88K for $900, but I also had them change the time chain & gears plus new seals. They've got the special tools and it still took two days. good luck

Ok so finally figured out the rave cd, yea it pretty much is the same as my hardcopy version but also comes with the books for RR and Defender, so pretty neat. You can find it over at rangerovers.net
