Was driving about 45 mph and heard a metal "POP". Had to tow it home as it acted like it was in neutral. Engine revs and goes nowhere.
Pulled of the T-case cover to find the following:
pics
1) inside gear teeth broken off
2) can move everything around w/ s screwdriver
3) bearing looks like it popped out? and inner seal ( to left of shaft) looks crooked?
Always maintained fluids so not sure what happened? Just a common failure or can anybody put a finger on the problem based on the pics?
Only used as street vehicle by me so far.
Engine was replaced by P>O> w/ 100 k motor that runs great.
Not sure if the Tranny and gear box are original but Rover has 200k.
**My questions are:
1) Just replace both the tranny and transfer case since the mileage is unknown or replace just the T-case.
2) anyway to tell if the Tranny is to blame internally.
3) easier to get out the Tranny and T-case together or T-case by itself?
I have read conflicting info.!
Thanks for any replies!

With that mileage, either you part it out or put in a used T/C.
Have you checked the color of the atf, when was it last changed?
You might want to send me your number, I can help you find a good 99 thru 01 t/case pretty easily.
Don't try to install a D1 case from any year.
