Former D2 owner doing some LR3 shopping this Saturday. Having never been in anLR3, I need some advice so I know what to look for on Saturday. I've done a lot of research on them so I know common issues but I'm more interested on some specifics. When I get in the vehicle, how do I raise and lower the suspension settings to verify everything is working ok?
What should I pay attention to regarding the diff while driving, any noises/sounds/vibrations to look for?
Any other special items to keep a watch for?

When I was shopping for mine I drove a few that I walked away from. Here are a few things that I always did and by no means am I a expert, I just thought I wanted everything to work when I bought it.

While sitting still:
1. Test all of the power windows and sunroof.
2. Turn the heat on and make sure it blows hot. Check to see if it blows on the different vent settings.
3. Turn the air conditioning on to make sure it blows cold. Check to see if it blows on the different vent settings.
4. When cranking the LR3, the compressor should run for about two minutes. Make sure you hear it, it sounds like a normal air compressor, just a little quieter.
5. Place the LR3 in reverse and look to see if the outside mirrors tilt down.
6. Raise and lower the supension via the switch located between the gearshift. LR3 should lift in 3 or 4 seconds and lower and level in about the same time.
7. Test the power seats to make sure they work.
8. This may sound stupid to some, but I always like to smell the exhaust. I like to do this mainly looking for a smell thats too sweet or too much of a burnt smell. This kind of gives you an idea about the emissions systems.

While driving:
1. Roll the windows down and accelerate fast. Listen for any out of the oridinary sounds on take off. Also listen for a knocking sound, this could be a control arm issue.
2. Make sure the LR3 dosent pull too much left or right on takeoff. (Alignment issue).
3. Brake fairly hard with your hands off of the wheel. Look for a pull right or left. Also listen for a knocking sound, this could be a control arm issue.

Hope this helps.

If you could tell us wht year, millage and who is selling privtate seller, land rover dealer?

To add to the above post
If it has navigation then you can watch what the suspension is doing via the 4X4 info screen cycle up and down 2-3 times and see if the compressor can keep up. if you raise lower too much the compressor will stop operating to cool off. Also check for even tire wear.

All great stuff except #5, the mirrors can be set to not dip in reverse, mine do not because I have it turned off. The info button while parked will let you adjust a bunch of options the mirror dip is one of them.

The Jag motor in the LR3 is not prone to the head gasket curse of past discos as far as I have read so we have that going for us.

It would be a good idea to have an independent mechanic check the ball joints, tre's and control arms if you are purchasing out of warranty. Especially if the steering tends to follow ruts in the pavement in a pronounced manner.

Thanks everyone for the replies; vehicle is an '06 v8 with 49K. The guy who used to work on my D2 has a new shop just up the street from the used car dealer so I will be taking it to him if I like the way it drives.

Kingfish, that head gasket problem was a pain. $2300 for a bad seal!
