2015 LR4 shifter

My round shifter that goes up and down , periodically will not go up. I can still turn the shifter into gear with it in the down position. My mechanic couldn't figure it out snd told me to go to the dealer. Any ideas on what it could be??

I've been fearful of that, and I'm glad to hear it isn't required to be up in order to shift.

I assume that there is a worm-gear driven actuator that raises and lowers it. If it were me, I would try to raise it permanently and not bother with it being lowered. That assumes that the motor is not married to a sensor and therefore will throw a bunch of codes or something.

Thank you, I'm printing for my mechanic. My issue might be more electrical. I've figured out if I start my car with the driver door open, the shifter will go up.
