New engine noise

I've noticed an engine noise that wasn't there before and I'm curious about it.

Today the engine sounds fine. I'm giving myself a heart attack over it lol. I recall being on the Colorado River and firing it up. It sounded like it had a rod knock and I was absolutely crushed because I've had rod knocks before. But it too went away. It seems like an oiling mechanism isn't working right sometimes.

There is a definite difference between the two videos. Strange (but good) that it seems to have gone away. Now you will be even more hypersensitive to engine noises everytime you start it up. Rover paranoia is brutal.

The noise came back. It seems like it needs to be warmed up. I might have spun a rod bearing but it does sound like its coming from the top somewhat so I was hoping for a valve train problem. Before doing the timing chain I thought hard about buying a new reman instead but I didn't really need a new engine at that time. If the problem is bad rod bearings that might be accessible from underneath w/out pulling the engine. I'm pretty sure rod bearings are not a common fail point.

I tried to hear the problem again and fired it up while warm, let it idle for 5 minutes and it sounds fine. I went for a freeway run to buy steaks 15 min each way and at home it sounds like the vid below that I just took. It sounds fine? Maybe a faint knock but that was there I think. If the problem were spun rod bearings the sound would be consistent with engine RPM and it would never go away.

mine makes that noise sometimes too. it goes away most the time, i always though it was a little bit of chain rattle before thinking rod knock. beside the point, if it was rod knock my oil filter would've been full of metal and its not. I agree it is weird but I've never stressed out over it too much. chain still is tight and engine has ran great despite the noise coming and going. noticed it years ago so if something bad was going to happen it probably already would've. i just keep the same routine, let her idle down, make sure oil is full via IID tool (before cold start), wait for the engine to warm up to 170-180 before going over 3k rpms, and 5k oil interval changes. I'm reasonably nice to this engine but the occasional freeway acceleration is fun with the muffler delete. that being said, oil needs to be full and warm before any of that happens. i think your fine, these engines are weird, don't let the constant anxiety overshadow the greatness of ownership, just be smart with how you treat the engine.

Edit: Another side note, the noise never increased when engine speed increased so I never really stressed.

Thanks for the feedback. I was ready to go overlanding full-time tomorrow but last week I took it to a shop to fix a torn ball joint boot on the a-arm under warranty and when I got it back there was a rattle in the front end when going over bumps. So I need to take it back a 3rd time tomorrow. Then the engine knock happened. It seems like a roller coaster if I'm not careful about my thoughts lol.

I'm going to leave the engine noise issue and take it out into the country anyways. I was pretty hesitant because when I get out there I'm far away from any gas stations let alone a Land Rover specialist mechanic. I can't wait to go. One more week and hopefully all the LR4 issues will be sorted.

I was thinking about doing a Blackstone Labs oil test on the next change. I just changed it a few hundred miles ago but these are the carfax documented change intervals:

And there’s a 40,000 interval??!!
Finally, you got it right at 3500…. but think of the damage to date…
