The fitment isn't issue and they do work. You'll need to figure out how to implement it using the stock amplifier and speakers. It's likely you'll loose some functionality and display if equipped with navigation. The sound is up to your ears but bet any headunit amplifier system would not sound as good than stock or external amplifier.

I tried an android head unit in a Tacoma before we purchased our LR3. It's not a terrible option, and they may have improved, but I felt that the compromises outweighed the convenience. Android Auto is a much simpler and usable interface.

I installed a Pioneer head unit with Nav and am happy with it other than the screen is hard to see since it's located where the factory radio was. I almost wish I had a second nav screen in the cubby where the factory nav is located. Maybe that's a project for this fall.

Is there some difference between the terms Android Head Unit and Android Auto?

I do not know much about this stuff but what is above supposed to do - just allow your Android phone to display on a larger display?

I gather for most of the devices, the "radio" in our 3 is to remain, just the "TV" set changes out and somehow all connects together?

If so, that might be a bit of a challenge given that the 6CD-465 units connect via a fibre optic loop, plus some normal type wires. Yes, the in and out fibre optic cables can be just joined together but I think the NAV unit is also the "red light" source.

The link below has a number of wiring diagrams plus a discussion of the fibre optic cables - the files may be of some interest.

An Android Head Unit is an aftermarket unit that runs on Android as opposed to Pioneer's GUI or Sony's for example, and Android Auto is an app that interfaces with your head unit. Apple car play is similar but obviously for Apple phones. If I understand correctly you can use your car apps on the stereo in the car, like Google Maps, Waze, etc. If you have a car that works with Android auto, you can USB into it and see you're phone on the screen. Curiously the green oval is absent from the list of car manufacturers who support Android Auto. Here is an informative link:

Hello, I installed a Pioneer head unit in my 2005 LR3 when the factory radio crapped out, taking the upper navigation screen out with it. The new head unit has Android Auto and Apple Car Play, which are great for streaming Waze and Google Maps onto the screen. I integrated the head unit into the factory Harman Kardon speakers, bypassing the amp under the passenger seat. I also installed a single-channel mini MB QUART amplifier that powers the subwoofer in the tailgate. Overall, it sounds amazing -- better than the premium sound in my late model BMW. The only gripe is the diminished ability to see the map while driving, and the dead screen up top. I was looking for the cubby that goes in there for non-nav equipped models, but stumbled across a thread where an owner had placed a Garmin
nüvi® 65LM in its place, which worked great. So that's another option...Any luck with either replacements for the dead screen? Thanks.
