I’ve contemplated upgrading to the D5 from the LR3, but it’s been a tough sell. Style wise, I’m a big fan of the squarish shape of the LR3. Had a D5 loaner and have to say I disagree on the visibility being better in the 5- it seems to be a bit less and somehow lower- I felt like I was in my wife’s xc60, but raised slightly. The tech was nice- and it was more stylish/posh interior, once again felt like the Volvo. It felt bigger but at the same time smaller, likely due to less headroom. The engine is smoother in the D5, slightly quieter, and incredibly more stable in turns, but the V8 “seems” more powerful, though at the same time the LR3 feels heavier. Didn’t really spend enough time with it to gauge the cargo space, other than noticing the height difference.

I’m going to wait until the defender is released, 7-seater, to make the final decision.

There is no way the SC V6 is "smoother": than the 4.4L V8 in the LR3.

We now fit this description. Traded our trusty LR3 in for a barely used D5 that was taken on a buy back. Even with 185k on it we got close to 3k for it. It was a tough choice but it needed close to 7k worth of work that hit all at once. D5 only had 5600 miles on it. It definitely feels different. The supercharged engine changes the throttle response that takes some getting used to. We'll miss the LR3 for sure but driving the D5 a bit reminds me of all the little things I like about my LR4 from a convenience point. (offroad aside) It's comfortable and has stupid things like the three blink turn signal and hands free entry. It also has CarPlay and the upgrade to the infotainment software seems nice. It's fast and responsive. The best thing? My wife likes it and you know the saying there. I was surprised that they don't all have low range and the steering wheel seems skinny in comparison. Both points though....see previous points.

Yeah, well it also had a slight rattle that probably indicated a timing chain replacement. Big money whammies possible with that great engine.

Somebody posted last week that they were offered a deal on a buyback and wondered if they were getting something that had been fixed or if they were jumping into the same problems the PO had. I can't find that thread, does anyone know where it is or if he got an answer, I'm sort of in the same situation.

That's it, thanks! I would love to hear anyone with TD5 experience.
