Are the diesel Range Rover Sports any good? We’re looking at possibly purchasing a certified used one but are trying to do some research first. It would be mainly used for traveling out of town. The shortest trip would be 20 miles. Are there known issues with the vehicles and are there any years to stay away from?
Thanks

Any modern Diesel vehicle must be driven at least monthly at a speed in excess of 60mph for at least an hour to maintain the cleaning system which sadly is a very expensive item to repair/replace when it goes bad. So it really depends on your use case.

Our shortest trip would be 20 miles at 80 mph. Most trips would be 200+ miles at 70-80 mph.

The diesel might work out well if most trips are long trips. That is not the expereince for most buyers, which is why they are not real popular in the USA. Also note they cost more to maintain than the gas trucks, in most places. Not a huge difference, but certainly don't expect a savings

Our current vehicle is a 2012 RRS with the 5.0L SC engine. We just turned 200K miles and are thinking of purchasing something newer with warranty/certified pre-owned. When I asked the head mechanic at a indy repair shop he recommended the diesel engine if we could find one. He said even the newer 5.0 SC engines have issues with the timing chains stretching and the tappets needing replaced as the engines mileage gets up there.

I have a 2016 RRS td6, purchased new. No problems, except for rapid tire wear, which I undertand is characteristic of RR and RRS. (new tires at 30000 miles, currently I am at about 52000 miles). Getting around 20-21 mpg overall, city and highway, much better mpg than that on freeway driving. My fourth RR, first diesel. Higly recommended.

How does it compare to the gas versions?

How does my 2016 compare to gas (petrol) Range Rovers? In my experience (this diesel, two RR gas V8, one LR Disco I V8), the mileage around town went from 12 mpg to about 20, freeway mileage at 75-80 mph went from 18-20 mpg for V8 to 35 mpg or better (!) with diesel. All other aspects, no noticeable difference for me. But, for me, it's a truck, so I don't need rapid acceleration from the stoplight. Melodious exhaust note not a requirement. For those, Porsche and Ferrari do it better. And the DEF liquid is a minor thing. So again, highly recommended. I wish LR still sold new td6 versions.
